Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Falmouth shuts out Harwich

Four different pitchers combined to spin a four-hit shutout for the Falmouth Commodores (16-15-2) in their 5-0 victory over the Harwich Mariners (14-18-1) on Wednesday. West Alabama senior Jacob Smith got the start, and set the tone with his 4.2 innings of shutout baseball. He only allowed two hits and struck out five. Next up was TCU's Hunter Hodges, who recorded the next seven outs, and struck out three, while allowing two hits and earning the win. Northwestern senior Nolan Morr, and Connecticut's Garrett Coe, each pitched a hitless inning to complete the shutout. Nathan Humphreys (Dallas Baptist) led the way offensively with his two RBIs, and Sam Houston State's Walker Janek added two hits and a run.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 3, Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 2

Carter Lovasz (College of William and Mary) picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Harbor Hawks (19-12-2), in a tightly contested matchup with the Red Sox (17-14-1). Lovasz went three innings, pitching the sixth, seventh, and eighth, and didn't allow a run. The sophomore also struck out four in his longest scoreless outing of the season. He earned the win thanks to Oklahoma State's Zach Ehrhard singling home Ohio State's Trey Lipsey in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. Ehrhard finished 2-for-4 with that RBI and a run scored in the win. Florida State sophomore Jamie Arnold picked up the save.

In his second start of the season, Micah Bucknam (LSU) pitched well. The righty went six innings, scattered six hits, and only allowed the two runs (one earned). Ryan Stafford (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) drove in both Y-D runs, and had a pair of hits.

Chatham Anglers 12, Cotuit Kettleers 12

The Anglers (9-19-2) completed a ten-run comeback before the game was called due to darkness in the eighth inning. The Anglers found themselves down 12-2 after the fourth inning. They proceeded to score twice in the fifth, four times in the sixth, and four times in the seventh to complete the turnaround. Texas A&M sophomore Kaeden Kent (2-for-4), and Oklahoma State senior Tyler Wulfert (3-fo-4) each had four RBIs to lead Chatham. Chatham's nine hole hitter (Florida's Deric Fabian), leadoff hitter (Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek, USC), and two-hole hitter (Zach MacDonald, Miami of Ohio), combined to reach base 10 times, and scored nine of the Anglers 12 runs. Gonzaga junior Liam Paddack kept the potent Cotuit offense quiet to allow the comeback to happen. He pitched 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, and only allowed a single run.

Penn State senior Grant Morris went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored for the Kettleers (22-9-1). Cole Mathis (College of Charleston) added two hits, two RBIs and a run as well. His college teammate Dylan Johnson also had a pair of RBIs and scored two runs.

Brewster Whitecaps 7, Wareham Gatemen 3

A late flurry of offense gave the Whitecaps their second consecutive victory. Brewster scored five runs between the six, seventh and eighth innings to turn around an early deficit. James Tibbs (Florida State), continued his recent hot hitting. The sophomore went 3-for-4, had a home run, and four RBIs, including a bases clearing double in the seventh, and scored twice. The big fly was Tibbs' sixth of the season. University of South Alabama's Will Turner also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Clemson's Austin Gordon got the start and only gave up an unearned run over four innings.

Arizona's Tommy Splaine had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored for the Gatemen (11-19-2).

Orleans Firebirds 5, Bourne Braves 3

The Firebirds (16-14) won their third straight game. Each of the Firebirds first four hitters in the batting order (UC Irvine's Jo Oyama, University of Central Florida's Drew Faurot, Notre Dame's Jack Penney, and UC San Diego's Matt Halbach) contributed a pair of hits, and Oyama, Faurot, and Penney all scored a run. Oyama went 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot, drove in a run, and scored one himself. George Washington's Eddie Micheletti Jr. also chipped in with a hit and an RBI. George Mason junior Konnor Eaton took the victory for Orleans with his five innings of relief. It was Eaton's longest outing of the season, and he only allowed one run, and struck out six.

Vanderbilt's Bryce Cunningham pitched well in his start for the Braves (16-15-1) despite his team taking the loss. He went five innings, only gave up five hits, and a single unearned run. Alabama's Bryce Eblin had a pair of hits, and added an RBI and a run scored.
