Canucks sign D Alex Edler to 2-year contract extension

The Vancouver Canucks and defenseman Alex Edler have come to terms on an extension.

General manager Jim Benning announced Thursday that the two sides have agreed to a two-year deal that carries an average annual value (AAV) of $6 million.

Edler is the team’s best left-handed blueliner and has skated on the Canucks’ top pairing for the better part of the last few campaigns. As it stands currently, the 33-year-old will fill that role once again heading into next season, until Quinn Hughes inevitably takes hold of the No. 1 slot on the left side.

After posting 10 goals and 34 points in just 56 games last season, he appears to have a lot left in the tank offensively and is still one of the premier power play point-men in the entire league.

Edler sits first among Canucks defensemen in career points (368) and power play points (170).
