Can't Wait For Saturday | Rocky Mountain high properly describes number of players leaving Colorado

Apr. 18—***

Like everyone else who follows college football, I have been fascinated by the shakeup at Colorado.

The program was revived by Deion Sanders, who has brought attention to Boulder unlike any the place had seen since the Bill McCartney era.

But it is possible — err likely — it has gone too far.

Currently, 26 Colorado players have entered the transfer portal since the end of the season. Some of them will be attending their third school.

Because Sanders is a skilled recruiter and an excellent talent evaluator, the quality of the talent level seems to have climbed.

One of the latest to portal is tailback Alton McCaskill IV, who previously starred at Houston before moving to Colorado. A severe knee injury hindered his progress.

I am all for players taking a shot at a better situation. But the turnover at Colorado is too great.

Though many expect Sanders to build a winner in Boulder as the team rejoins the Big 12, there are no guarantees. While a significantly new roster in basketball might work, it is tougher to pull off in football. Timing and teamwork are so vital, Hard to manage those in a tiny preparation window.

Most of the departees at Colorado are on defense and that makes somc sense. The team gave up at least 34 points in seven games during a 4-8 season. Ranked early, the team fell apart in the back half and the lack of cohesion was a culprit.

The team faces a softer schedule in 2024 and should be able to earn a bowl bid. At least. The biggest game is late in the season against Kansas.

Credit Sanders if he is able to win big with the massive turnover. But it doesn't seem sustainable.
