Canes trade Gleason for Leafs' Liles
The Carolina Hurricanes traded Tim Gleason to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday in exchange for defensemen John-Michael Liles and Dennis Robertson.
The deal was completed during the Winter Classic game between the Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday afternoon at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Gleason, 30, spent the past eight years with the Hurricanes but played in only 17 games with Carolina this season. He has no goals and one assist in the second year of a four-year, $16 million deal.
A member of the U.S. team that won a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics, Gleason has a no-trade clause in his contract and had to approve the deal.
Liles, 33, was a healthy scratch for the Winter Classic game. He played in just six games for Toronto this season but was a productive NHL player in the past, scoring 46 points for the Colorado Rockies in 76 games during the 2010-11 season.
Both Gleason and Liles were mentioned in trade rumors for several weeks.
Robertson was a sixth-round pick by the Maple Leafs in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
