Callisburg ladies' off to state; Moerschell will chase boys' solo crown

Apr. 21—The Callisburg Ladycats punched their ticket to the State Golf tournament in Austin at ShadowGlen Golf Club May 6-7. The girls ended up second after two rounds at Oakhurst Country Club in Bullard.

The first round ended with Gunter being 24 shots ahead. The second round concluded with Callisburg shooting the tournament low round 367 beating Gunter by 10 but not good enough to dig out the hole they created after round one. Meg Morris led the Cats with a two-day total 183, finishing fifth. Mia Oliveira was sixth with her 185 total. Claire Talley (194), Berkleigh Preston (201) and Addison Collier (218) make up the team.

"The future is extremely bright for these young ladies, with Meg being the only senior. With some hard work this summer, big dreams can be achieved," said Callisburg Golf Head Coach Randy Romines.

Moerschell off to state

The boys' season ended quicker than expected with a fifth-place finish at Oakhurst. The boys had problems putting on very poor greens and just never got going, Romines said.

On the bright side, Boo Moerschell was the individual champion with a two day total 148. Bennett Wells (164) finished in 10th. Tripp Hazel, Logan Grisham and Wyatt Shaffer were the other team members.

"Boo had one of the best scrambling tournaments I've seen in a long time. He hit just five fairways in 36 holes and had to manipulate very bumpy greens to shoot 74 each day," added Romines.

Boo will now compete at Grey Rock golf club April 29-30. He will vie for a state championship after finishing state runner-up last year.
