C.J. Stroud, Michael Mayer and Hendon Hooker highlight Maxwell Award’s weekly honor roll

It was another huge weekend for C.J. Stroud as the Ohio State quarterback was one of six players to be recognized by the Maxwell Football Club this week. The Buckeyes quarterback was the leader of the pack in the weekly honor roll for the Maxwell Award, one of the most prestigious awards in college football.

He was also joined by an Ohio State teammate, also on the offensive side of the ball, in the weekly honor roll.

The Maxwell Football Club awards the Maxwell Award, annually given to the nation’s top college football player. They also hand out the Chuck Bednarik Award for the top defensive player in college football.

Every March, the club hosts an annual awards gala at the Harrah’s in Atlantic City, N.J.

Check out the six players who made this week’s Maxwell Award Weekly Honor Roll!

QB C.J. Stroud, Ohio State

The numbers were almost gaudy for Stroud en route to being named the Maxwell Award’s Player of the Week. In an impressive 49-20 win at Michigan State, Stroud was 21-of-26 for 361 yards with six touchdowns and an interception. Stroud has now topped 1,700 passing yards this season with 24 touchdowns and three interceptions.

WR Marvin Harrison, Jr., Ohio State

The Buckeyes place two on the honor roll this week with Harrison nabbing seven catches for 131 yards with three receiving touchdowns. There is a legitimate argument that the Stroud-Harrison connection is the best in the country.

WR Israel Abanikanda, Pittsburgh

The stat line for Abanikanda would only make sense in a video game. On 36 carries, the Panthers running back had six rushing touchdowns and 320 rushing yards in a 45-29 win over Virginia Tech. He broke Pittsburgh’s single-game rushing record, previously held by Tony Dorsett. Not bad company.

QB Hendon Hooker, Tennessee

It was a clean, tidy and efficient game from Hooker as Tennessee pounded No. 25 LSU. Hooker was 17-of-27 for 239 yards with two touchdowns and another 10 carries for 56 yards running the ball. Hooker didn’t turn the ball over in the win.

TE Michael Mayer, Notre Dame

Is Notre Dame back? A weekend win over BYU is a good sign for the Fighting Irish and so is another strong performance from Mayer. The junior tight end had seven catches for 118 yards with two touchdowns. Mayer now has a touchdown catch in four straight games, the last three of which have been Notre Dame wins.

QB Max Duggan, TCU

The Horned Frogs ruined the best story in college football this year with a 38-31 win over Kansas. The play of quarterback Max Duggan was a big reason for the win; Duggan was 23-of-33 for 308 passing yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also ran the ball nine times for 55 yards with a touchdown.
