BYU offensive lineman Sione Veikoso dies after collapse of retaining wall

BYU offensive lineman Sione Veikoso died in a construction accident in Kailua, Hawaii, on Friday, the school announced.

He was 22.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that Veikoso was one of six people at a construction site when a retaining rock wall behind a home fell and trapped three of them.

Veikoso died at the scene and two others were transported to the hospital.

"We are extremely saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our brothers, Sione Veikoso," BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said on social media. "His passing is heartbreaking to all of us. We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to his family as we share in their grief. Our love for you is forever, Sione!"

Veikoso, a redshirt freshman, played in one game in 2022 after transferring from Arizona State. The school said he served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 2018-20.
