Butler basketball forward, Lawrence North grad D.J. Hughes enters transfer portal

Well, Butler had its full 13-man roster allotment for a week.

Sophomore forward D.J. Hughes has entered his name in the transfer portal, per IndyStar's Akeem Glaspie.

Recruited out of Lawrence North by LaVall Jordan, Hughes played a limited role his two seasons with the Bulldogs. He played in 34 games, averaging 8.1 minutes, 1.4 points and 1.7 rebounds an appearance.

An undersized post player at 6-6, Hughes fell further down the pecking order in Butler's extensive roster overhaul, which features nine new players, and stands now to add a 10th.

Hughes, averaged 13.5 points and a team-leading 7.5 rebounds to help Lawrence North to a Class 4A state finals appearance as a senior. The Wildcats were 53-5 in Hughes' final two years. He was part of a local heavy 2021 recruiting class that included Perry Meridian's Jayden Taylor and Brownsburg's Pierce Thomas. Now, all three have transferred out this season (Taylor to N.C. State and Thomas to Eastern Kentucky).

Hughes picked Butler over offers from Ball State, Duquesne, Evansville, IUPUI, Morehead State, New Orleans and Toledo.

In an offseason of major change, only Connor Turnbull, Jalen Thomas and John-Michael Mulloy are scheduled to return off last year's roster.
