The Clarets started the game well and opened the scoring through Foster, who got ahead of his marker to poke Koleosho’s pass across the box into the net. However, Tottenham came into the game after a slow start and turned the score in their favour. Son rushed forward on the break and played a quick one-two with Solomon before chipping Trafford to equalise. Spurs then went ahead in first-half stoppage time after a stunning goal from Romero. Maddison added a third soon after the restart with a fantastic curling effort before Son scored twice to complete his hat-trick. He netted his second after directing his shot past Trafford from close range, with Porro assisting the third. His pinpoint cross behind Burnley's defence found the 31-year-old, who took the ball into his stride and slotted his effort in. Brownhill then netted a consolation for the hosts in stoppage time.

Vincent Kompany’s men were comfortably beaten in their opening fixture, losing 3-0 to reigning champions Manchester City before taking a 16-day break from the division. They were supposed to face Luton Town in their second game, but it was postponed as Kenilworth Road was not ready.
