Philo's Mahon, Maysville's Van Wey claim regional titles

NEW CONCORD — A pair of the Muskingum Valley League's best stood atop the podium after the first day of the Division II regional track and field meet on Thursday at Muskingum University.

The running finals and reminder of the field events will be Saturday.

Philo's Aidan Mahon won the boys long jump with a distance of 21-feet-10 1/2 inches, and Maysville's Bella Van Wey posted a distance of 39-10 1/2 to claim the girls shot put.

The top four placers in each event earned a berth to next week's state meet at Dayton's Welcome Stadium.

John Glenn's Ava Hoffman came in second in the girls high jump (5-4), the 4x800 girls relay of Kira Kaiser, Laurie Baughman, Brea Wilfong and Ashlynn Kuklica took third (9 minutes, 38.01 seconds), and Chelsea Sotherden placed fourth in the shot (38-0 3/4), while Sheridan's boys 4x800 relay of Tate Ruthers, Simon Conrad, John Skinner and Hunter Adams also came in third (8:04.64) to advance.

Meadowbrook's Jamarcus Berger finished fifth (20-7 1/4) and Cambridge's Eli Edwards came in sixth (20-0 3/4) in the boys long jump; Cambridge's Cinjin Gibson finished fifth in the boys pole vault (12-8); Sheridan's Lily Dennis came in seventh in the girls shot (36-5 1/4); River View's Chloee Adams placed seventh in the girls high jump (5-1); and John Glenn's boys 4x800 relay of Caiden Lake, Tanner Caudill, Ethan Zell and Ian Davis finished eighth (8:28) to round out the top-eight finishers.

Running finalists, which were the top eight times, included New Lexington's Jocee Bowen (100 hurdles); Cambridge's Zoey Caldwell (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Philo's Mahon (400), Deacon Scott (110 hurdles), Makenna Staker (300 hurdles) and girls 4x200 relay; John Glenn's Jessica Church (100, 400) and 4x400 boys and girls relays; Coshocton's Israel Rice (100, 200) and boys 4x100 relay; River View's Caily Shriver (400), girls 4x200 relay and boys 4x200 relay; West Muskingum's Molly Spiker (300 hurdles), Lane Kennedy (200) and boys 4x200 relay; Ridgewood's Kenzie Bice (400), Talon Carns (300 hurdles) and boys 4x200 relay; Morgan's Adam Cooper (300 hurdles) and boys 4x100 and 4x400 relays; and Sheridan's Hunter Adams (400) and Claire Shriner (300 hurdles).

In Division III meet at Heath on Wednesday, Buckeye Trail's Janson Alloway cleared 13-feet-8 inches to place second in the boys pole vault, as the top four placers advanced to next week's state meet.

The Warriors also had several finalists in the running events. The 4x200 relay of Mason Todd, Charlie Parry, Koen Eagon and Donovan Geiger posted the fastest time of 1:30.39, as the top eight teams will compete in Friday's finals. They were also third in the 4x100 (44.61), while Geiger had the second-fastest times in the 100 (11.32) and 200 (22.71) and Eagon had the third-fastest time in the 300 hurdles (41.47).

Crooksville's 4x200 of Brayson Hill, Riley Waggoner, Hunter Hurst and Grayson Houk posted the sixth-fastest time (1:33.74) to reach the finals, while the 4x100 just missed the finals in ninth (45.21).

Rosecrans' Brody Zemba has the third fastest time in the 200 (22.96) and the sixth fastest time in the 100 (11.47), while the 4x100 of Evan Backus, Conner Wells, Tizian Schmelzer and Zemba was seventh (45.04) to also reach the finals. Stephen Sagan also finished 10th in the boys long jump (20-2 1/4).

There were no state qualifiers from the Division I meet at Pickerington North on Wednesday. Zanesville's Camron Willett was 12th in the 110 hurdles (15.78), as the top eight made the finals.

Tri-Valley's Chris Gargasz finished ninth in the boys discus (134-4), and teammate Micah Shupert was 13th (129-11).
