Buckeye Central's Mia McDougal named Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum Volleyball Player of the year

NEW WASHINGTON - Mia McDougal had been a standout on the court each of the last three seasons for Buckeye Central — and even caught the eye of spectators as a freshman.

All of her hard work, countless hours in the gym and constant desire to improve culminated in a senior season she'll never forget.

McDougal helped take the team from a 12-12 record last season to 19-8 and a regional runner-up finish. She was rewarded with first team All-Northern 10 honors along with first team All-District 6 in Division IV. And to cap it all off, second team All-Ohio in Division IV.

She finished this season with 342 kills, 28 aces, 111 blocks, 382 digs, 45 assists and 201 receptions, which was enough to lead the N10 in blocks by 24 and sit fourth overall in kills.

This has been a memorable season for McDougal and the Buckettes as they finally conquered Monroeville in the postseason after the Eagles knocked out the Buckettes in four of the last five years, twice in the district championship. The win over Monroeville gave Buckeye Central its first district championship in six years.

That meant a regional appearance for the first time since advancing to state in 2017. The semifinal against Columbia might go down as the most impressive win McDougal has ever been a part of. After dropping the first two sets and facing match point trailing 24-23 in the third, Buckeye Central rallied to win the third and fourth, then closed out a remarkable comeback taking the fifth. In the win she had 24 kills, one ace, 10 blocks, 15 digs and six receptions completely taking over the final three sets.

McDougal ends her career with 828 kills, 68 aces, 285 blocks, 708 digs, 91 assists and 532 receptions. She won two league titles as a freshman and sophomore along with two district runner-up finishes before the senior year breakthrough.

Her high school volleyball career officially came to a close playing in the District 6 All-Star Game hosted by Norwalk High School. And her final sendoff is this — Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum Volleyball Player of the Year.
