Bruce Bochy went from retirement to the World Series. His journey has Space Coast roots

Bruce Bochy was already famous in baseball. He won three World Series rings as manager of the San Francisco Giants. He has a fantastic Southern drawl. He has maybe the biggest head in Major League Baseball history.

And now the Melbourne High School and Eastern Florida State College grad has added another chapter to his Hall of Fame resume: He's returned from retirement and led the Texas Rangers to their first World Series championship.

The 68-year-old retired in 2019 with the 11th-most wins in MLB history. But the Rangers brought him in before this season, and the EFSC alum guided the Rangers to a remarkable turnaround. After going 68-94 in 2022, Texas skyrocketed to 90-72 and into the playoffs. After sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles, the teams with the best records in the American League, the Rangers beat the defending champion Houston Astros in seven games, sending legendary manager Dusty Baker into retirement and advancing to the World Series for the first time since 2011.

Bochy's Rangers finished off the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, November 1, in the World Series, winning 4 games to 1. Bochy became the fifth manager to lead two separate teams to World Series titles and the third to lead three teams to the Fall Classic, beginning with the San Diego Padres in 1998.

Bochy has already been recognized for his career accomplishments in Brevard County. He was elected to the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, and the EFSC baseball team plays at Bruce Bochy Field. His place in Cooperstown at the Baseball Hall of Fame is all but set in stone: It's just a matter of how many World Series titles will go on his plaque.

Here's a few things to know about the Melbourne native:

His cap size is either 8 1/8 or 8 1/4, depending on who you ask. For reference, the official MLB shop does not sell caps in sizes larger than 8.

Fortunately, Bochy has a good sense of humor about it. "I'd bring my helmet with me (after being traded), and my new team had to spray paint it with their colors because they didn't have a helmet that would fit me," he told ESPN's Tim Kurkjian.

"When I played, they'd have accused me of using steroids, as big as my head is," he told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2007.

With MVP Ken Caminiti, Tony Gwynn and Steve Finley leading the offense and Trevor Hoffman anchoring the bullpen, they made the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history, though they were swept in the Division Series by the Cardinals.

Two years later, Bochy would lead the Pads to their second-ever World Series.
