Brown sisters leads Brewbaker Tech to first-ever high school softball state title

OXFORD — After a six-hour rain delay at Choccolocco Park on Thursday, Brewbaker Tech defeated Ardmore 4-0 to win the AHSAA Class 5A high school state championship.

Brewbaker (46-10) earned it's first-ever state title berth last season and after forcing a winner-take-all game in a 3-2 game one victory. All the Rams wanted this year was the gold.

The game was scoreless through the first five innings until a two-run double by Khamiyah Brown gave Brewbaker a 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, a missed catch in the outfield led two more Brewbaker runners home to extend the lead to 4-0 taking the air out of the raucous crowd supporting Ardmore (35-20) .

Brewbaker fell short to Elmore County on Wednesday, 7-6, and was a loss away from possibly being eliminated. On Thursday, the Rams defeated Scottsboro, avenged the Elmore county loss and edged Ardmore en route to claiming the school's first state title.

Taniyah Brown, Khamiyah Brown and Gabbie York all represented Brewbaker in the Class 5A all-tournament team. Ardmore’s Sara Sanders, AG King and Ella Singletary were also selected to the all-tournament team.

Taniyah finished with four strikeouts after pitching 28 straight innings and only allowing eight runs (one earned run) in four games. She was honored as tournament MVP after finishing with 17 total strikeouts.

The motto for coach Chris Steiner's team this season was “Empty the Bucket,” meaning that every single person had to give everything she had for every pitch of every game.

“A really good group of kids who’ve been working together a long time and had a goal in mind,” Steiner said. "We believed that goal the first day I took over the program, and they bought it. I’m so proud of them.”
