Brosmer throws for career-high 5 TDs as UNH rolls past Stonehill in opener

EASTON, Mass. – Junior captain Max Brosmer threw a career-high five touchdown passes and senior captain Dylan Laube scored three touchdowns to lead the University of New Hampshire football team to a 55-17 season-opening win over Stonehill on Saturday at W.B. Mason Stadium.

Brosmer completed 19 of 25 passes for 285 yards and completed his TD passes to five different receivers. Laube scored three different ways: a 58-yard punt return, 23-yard reception and 11-yard run – all in the first quarter. He finished the game with 229 all-purpose yards with a breakdown of 89 rushing, 31 receiving, 51 kickoff return and 58 punt return.

Ryan Toscano and Nathan Kapongo tied for the team lead with five tackles, and both players had one tackle for loss. Six Wildcats were credited with four tackles.

UNH’s special teams recovered a muffed punt and blocked two kicks. Zach Garron blocked a punt that resulted in Laube’s TD punt return and Randall Harris  blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt, also in the first quarter.

New Hampshire is at Western Michigan University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. UNH’s home opener is Sept. 16 (6 p.m.) against Dartmouth College for Youth Sports Day and Band Day.

On Saturday, UNH raced out to a 27-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes. The Wildcats were held to a 3-and-out on the first possession of the game, but Caleb Mead recovered a muffed punt at the SC 22 to immediately give possession back to the ‘Cats.

Four plays later, Brosmer connected with Colby Ramshaw in the right flat for a 2-yard touchdown. UNH did not convert the 2-point conversion and UNH led 6-0 at 12:06 of the first quarter.

New Hampshire’s defense held the Skyhawks to a 3-and-out, then Laube bounced off a defender and raced down the right sideline to extend the lead to 13-0 at 11:14.

The Wildcats’ defense stopped Stonehill on 4th-and-1 from the SC 39, and five plays later Brosmer completed a short pass to a wide-open Laube on the right side and he scampered into the end zone to push the advantage to 20-0 at 7:06.

UNH rushed the ball 35 times for 153 yards as part of 437 total yards of offense. The Wildcats recorded nine tackles for loss but not a sack; the Skyhawks made five tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including two sacks.
