Bronson's Hayes voted Outstanding Track Female Athlete as Vikings compete at Centreville Invite

CENTREVILLE, MI. - The Bronson Viking track and field program traveled a short distance west on Saturday as they traveled to compete in the Centreville Track Invitational.

Both the Bronson teams finished in ninth place in their respective standings on Saturday, with the men finishing in ninth place with 537 points while the women finished in ninth place with a score of 619 points.

The big news coming out of the invitational came out of the women’s competition as Bronson sophomore Jaiden Hayes was voted by opposing coaches as the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet. Hayes brought home four medals from the Centreville Invite, including two gold medal finishes, one silver medal, and a fifth place effort. Hayes’ specialty on the season has been the two shortest races, which happen to take place back-to-back, making her feat in both races even more special. Saturday it was Hayes starting the day with a silver medal, taking runner-up honors in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 18.35 seconds. One race later it was Hayes taking to the track again, this time bringing home the gold after winning the 100 meter dash in a time of 13.56 seconds. Hayes brought home one other gold medal on the day, winning the 300 hurdles in a time of 51.32 seconds, a season best time. Adding to her already impressive medal collection it was Hayes finishing in fifth place in the long jump with a jump of 13 feet, 2.25 inches, putting a cap on an amazing invitational.

In the women’s team standings, it was Constantine winning the championship with a total team score of 1287 points, followed by the host team from Centreville in second place with a score of 1174. Jonesville finished in third place with a score of 1021, followed by Gobles, Mendon, Climax Scotts, White Pigeon, St. Phil, Bronson, Marcellus, and Colon.

Helping Bronson to their ninth place team finish with a finish in the top eight of their respective events was Abbi Ferry, seventh place in the 1600; Victoria Loth, seventh place in the 400; the 400 relay team of Kyleigh Springman, Zayda Cardenas, Victoria Loth, and Gracie Marks, seventh place; Natalie Tappenden, seventh place in the shot put; and Skylar Smith, fifth place in the discus.

On the men’s side of the competition, it was Centreville defending home court with the championship win, edging out the runner-up team from Gobles by just 10 points as it was the Bulldogs winning with a score of 1213. Gobles finished in second place with 1203 points, followed by Mendon in third place with 938 points. Marcellus finished in fourth place with 794 points, followed by White Pigeon, Jonesville, Climax Scotts, Constantine, Bronson, Colon, and St. Phil.

The Bronson effort was paced by sophomore Boston Bucklin who finished in first place in the 800 meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 2.80 seconds, a personal best time. Bucklin also finished in fifth place in the 400 in a time of 53.23 seconds as well as finishing in third place in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 8 inches.

Senior Aden Hathaway also had a solid meet, taking second place in the 1600 meter run in a time of 4 minutes, 49.95 seconds, a personal best time, and seventh place in the 800 in a personal best time of 2 minutes, 10.82 seconds.

Rounding out the Bronson effort with a top eight finish in their respective event was Perry Lake, seventh place in the 1600 and eighth place in the 3200; the 1600 relay team of Kam Brackett, Hathaway, Steven Pfister, and Gabe Erwin, seventh place; Everardo Lozada, eighth place in the shot put; and Layne Knisely, seventh place in the pole vault.

The Bronson Viking track and field programs will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Springport to finish out their Big 8 conference schedule.
