Broncos look to take a page out of Patriots’ playbook
For Denver, it’s time to sink or swim. After starting the season 3-1, the Broncos find themselves drowning after suffering four straight losses. The good news is the Broncos will finally return home after a three game road trip. The bad news is they host the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Then again, this might just be the perfect time to welcome Brady and company back to Mile High.
“It is the perfect opponent,” said Broncos’ quarterback Brock Osweiler. “I think anytime you find yourself in a losing streak like this, not playing good football, you want to play a great opponent. Because if you can go out there and play a good football game and find a way to get a win, it’s going to create a ton of momentum for your football team.”
The Broncos would welcome any momentum their way after their morale took a deep dive last Sunday in Philadelphia. Many players have noted that they felt embarrassed by the 51-23 blowout loss to the Eagles. Following the loss, head coach Vance Joseph noted that every player needed to do a “self-check.”
The Broncos returned to practice Wednesday focused and with a sense of urgency along with a belief that they have the guys in the locker room who are capable of getting back on track.
“We know what time it is. We have a chance to do something special. We have a chance to do something really special that only us in that locker room believe we can do,” stated Broncos’ running back C.J. Anderson. “That’s where it starts and if everybody can change their mind and rig the mind, rig the game to believe we can do it. We can definitely do it.”
For the Broncos to turn the tide on their season, the Broncos will look to take a page out of the Patriots’ playbook. For years, the New England Patriots have lived by the words “do you job.” It’s been brainwashed into their heads time and time again by Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick. The idea of “do your job” is centered on accountability and staying focused on what you can control. In the last four games, the Broncos haven’t done their job.
“When we look at the film and we see someone isn’t doing their job, that’s a problem, and it’s addressed,” stated Broncos’ linebacker Shane Ray. “But, when it comes down to game day you can’t control everything that every single guy does. As a team you’ve got to try and instill the culture that when it’s game day everybody does their job.”
The Broncos season is not over, yet. At 3-5, Denver is currently two and a half games out of first place in the division with half the season still to go. But make no mistake; this is Denver’s final chance to make a stand. A loss on Sunday night would likely be the final blow in a season full of disappointment.
However, with a win on Sunday night against the defending champions, the Broncos give themselves a chance and just maybe the morale boost needed to get their head above water and to start swimming in the right direction.
