Brockton's new pro baseball club to be named New England Chowdahheads

BROCKTON — The votes are in. It's Chowdahheads.

That's the name of the new Brockton-based pro baseball club. The New England Chowdahheads (not a typo) open play this spring at Campanelli Stadium. The team said it received about 3,100 votes among five finalists.

Reaction on social media was muted. On the team's Facebook announcement, none of the nine comments showed enthusiasm for the moniker. The reception on Instagram was similarly negative.

The other finalists were Nor'easters, Grinders, Knockouts and Chowdah Monsters. Apparently the two chowder options didn't split the vote enough.

In defense of the name, it's in keeping with vibes of other teams in the Frontier League. Take the Wild Things or Y'alls, for instance. At least one other sports team has used the name: The New England Chowderheads of the defunct Professional Box Lacrosse Association.

By whatever name, the team will be bringing dozens of home games to Campanelli. And when the Chowdahheads aren't playing at home, the amateur Brockton Rox might be in town. For those who complain there's nothing to do in Brockton, the Chowdahheads aim to offer a regular, family-friendly entertainment option.

"We’re thrilled with the incredible response from our fans in naming the team,” said Nick Desrosiers, general manager of both the new club and the Rox. “The New England Chowdahheads demonstrates the early passion and dedication of our supporters, and we can’t wait to bring an exciting, fun-filled brand of baseball and nightly entertainment to the region."

The club said further announcements, including the Chowdahhead logo and coaching staff, will be announced later.

Wondering why the team isn't named for Brockton? The club previously said it wants to create a regional draw.
