A brief history of the Rams’ hook-and-ladder two-point conversion

With 1:41 left in the third quarter of their divisional round playoff game against the Packers, the Rams got tricky with a direct snap to running back Cam Akers that hadn’t worked before. But it did on this occasion with an seven-yard touchdown.

Then, Sean McVay called a cool hook-and-ladder for the two-point conversion, closing the score to 25-18 in the Packers’ favor and giving Akers a bit more love.

One Twitter friend pointed out that this was very much like the Dolphins’ two-point conversion against the Patriots in Week 15, when Tua Tagovailoa got tricky on a play that went from Tagovailoa to receiver Isaiah Ford to running back Salvon Ahmed.

While this was quite similar, leave it up to expert analyst Nate Tice to go waaaaayyyyy down the rabbit hole to 2017, when the Rams used the same concept outside the red zone. And as you may know, in 2017, current Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was McVay’s offensive coordinator.

Was that a shot across the bow from McVay to LaFleur — two coaches who are still best friends? Perhaps.
