Breckenridge's Lehr defends state 800 title; Stephenville's Cameron, Brister also golden

AUSTIN – Chase Lehr and Lucas Rizo battled it out one last time at the Class 3A state track and field meet Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Once again, Lehr got the best of the Crane senior.

Lehr, a Breckenridge senior, defended his title in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 51.82 seconds. Rizo was second (1:53.27), followed by Elysian Fields’ Grant Sims (1:56.57) and Jim Ned senior Chris Saling (1:57.51).

Lehr and Rizo also finished 1-2 at the state meet last year, with Lehr running a 1:55.41, and Rizo a 1:57.44. Saling also was fourth.

The trio finished 1-2-3 at the Region I-3A meet on April 29 at ACU’s Elmer Gray Stadium.

So, there’s a lot of familiarity between the runners, especially Lehr and Rizo.

“I think it prepared me pretty well, seeing him at regionals and seeing his times being consistent really pushed me,” Lehr said.

It was a special moment for Lehr, who will run track at the University of North Texas in the fall.

“It means everything,” Lehr said. “I give all the glory to God. He gives me the ability to come out and compete.”

Stephenville's Cameron, Brister prove golden

Lehr wasn’t the only Big Country athlete to nab gold.

Stephenville senior Victoria Cameron won the Class 4A girls’ 100, while Stephenville junior Creece Brister won the boys’ shot put and got second in the discus.

Cameron ran away with the 100, turning in a 11.35 – well in front of second-place Carde Moore of Houston North Forest (11.89).

It was a bit of redemption for Cameron, who finished second in the 100 by .04 last year, after winning it her sophomore year.

Cameron also was fifth in the long jump (18 feet), while running the anchor leg on the Honeybees’ third-place 800 relay team (1:41.05) and fourth-place 400 relay team (47.79).

Kenna Cashon, Marin Copeland and MacKenzie Gonzalez teamed with Cameron on both relays.

Brister won the shot put by nearly 2 feet with a toss of 59-1½. Ingleside’s Eric Edison was second (56-6¾).

Stafford’s Andrew Huff won the discus (179-9), while Brister was second (168-3).

Stephenville’s E.J. Hiitola tied two others for the best jump in the boys’ pole vault at 15-0 but finished third on misses.

Three Big Country athletes also collected bronze medals in the 3A meet. Ballinger’s Addison Martin took third in the girls’ 800 (2:17.53), while University City Randolph’s Sophia Bendet was first (2:16.01), and Lytle’s Moriah Gomez was third (2:16.35).

“It feels awesome,” Martin said. “It’s what I’ve been training for this whole time, and the hard work finally paid off and I got some hardware.”

It’s her first state track medal, though she did pick one up last year with a 10th-place finish at the state cross country meet.

Martin credited her teammates and coaches for her success.

“They’re always pushing me and putting positive thoughts in my head, which I think showed out here tonight,” Martin said.

Martin, who is mulling running for Angelo State in the fall, had to make a big push at the end and even dove at the finish to nab that highly sought medal.

“My strategy was to stay with the Randolph girl, because she had the highest time,” Martin said. “Then that second lap, by the last 100, I sprinted as hard as I could.”

Ballinger senior Jillian Halfmann was third in the girls’ pole vault (11-0). West’s Laney Kucera won it (12-6), followed by Mount Vernon’s Olivia Baird (12-3).

Breckenridge sophomore Sawyer Wimberley took third in the boys’ 200 (21.82) behind Jefferson’s Luke McMullen (21.33) and New London West Rusk’s Andon Mata (21.68).

Snyder junior Jay Castillo wass fourth in the 4A boys’ 400 (48.25), while Brownwood’s Ike Hall was fifth in the 4A boys’ triple jump (47-6).

Sweetwater junior Toreyna Saddler was fifth in the 4A girls’ shot put (39-6½).

Brownwood’s Tyse Savage was seventh in the 4A boys 200 (21.70), and Sweetwater’s Aunisti Griffin was eighth in the 400 girls’ 200 (26.32).

Merkel’s Avery Holloway was fifth in the girls’ 300 hurdles (45.27), and Breckenridge’s Adler Loftis was fifth in the boys’ discus (155).

Breckenridge’s foursome of Karter Smalley, Angel Alvarado, Jaime Cruz and Lehr was fifth in the 1,600 relay (3:23.65).

Jim Ned’s Ashlynn Galvin was eighth in the girls’ triple jump (37-0¼).

The Class 2A and 5A state meets will be Friday, beginning with the field events and 3,200 final at 9 a.m., followed by the running finals at 5 p.m.
