Breaking down the picks in new Steelers 7-round mock draft

The 2023 NFL draft was huge for the Pittsburgh Steelers and general manager Omar Khan. Khan’s first draft as GM netted Pittsburgh multiple top rookies. We are all hopeful that 2024 will be a repeat performance. Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly put out a new seven-round mock draft and so let’s take a look at the picks.

First round - DL Jer'Zhan Newton, Illinois

Drafting Newton would be the most Steelers pick of all time. He’s a great player and would reinforce the line of scrimmage.

Second round - C Sedrick Van Pran, Georgia

Given the small number of elite centers in this draft, Van Pran might be the best interior lineman left when Pittsburgh goes on the clock. His connection to Georgia only helps his case.

Third round - WR Malachi Corley, Western Kentucky

We’re on the same page here in planning for the future as well as giving the Steelers a replacement for Allen Robinson II. We would love to see Calvin Austin III step up but adding a receiver here as insurance makes sense.

Fourth round - OL Brandon Coleman, TCU

I’d like to see the Steelers do better this early in the draft than a developmental guard.

Fourth round - CB Cam Hart, Notre Dame

There are a lot of similarities between Hart and Cory Trice from last season. Drafting Hart is banking on Trice coming back healthy and ready to contribute in 2024.

Sixth round - S Josh Proctor, Ohio State

Seventh round - ILB Nathaniel Watson, Mississippi State

A seventh-round flyer on Watson is a great option. He’s a hard worker, highly productive, smart and a sneaky good athlete.
