A breakaway 'European Super League' would be a complete disaster for soccer

For many years, it has been rumored that the biggest soccer clubs in Europe would conspire to form a closed breakaway ‘super league’, abandoning their domestic duties in favor of weekly heavyweight bouts against the continent’s finest.

Those rumors have been given credence by document leaks published by Der Spiegel, which claim that seven of the biggest-earning teams have met behind UEFA’s to discuss a potential breakaway league.

While the move is undoubtedly fuelled by the prospect of higher revenues, it could threaten the very fabric of the game. It’s likely that no one would benefit—even the profit-seeking clubs.
