Brandywine's Gavin Schoff, Maddison Ward win state wrestling titles Saturday afternoon

Brandywine High School's Gavin Schoff has completed his wrestling season undefeated after claiming the state championship in the Division 4 157-pound weight division Saturday afternoon at Ford Field in Detroit.

In addition to Schoff, Bobcat junior Maddison Ward claimed the girls title at 170 pounds. She won a pin fall over Heaven Cole of Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in 5:48. Ward finishes her junior season with a 37-1 record. It is just the third year that girls wrestling has been sanctioned by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Schoff claimed a 1-0 decision over Layne Knisely of Bronson to win the state title.

Schoff, a senior, finishes his season at 49-0. He is Brandywine's first boys state wrestling champion since 1992.

Also in Division 4, Schoff's teammate, Kaiden Rieth, finished fifth in the 126 pound group. Rieth pinned Jayce Ritchie of Martin in 2:05. Rieth finished his senior season at 45-7.

In Division 3, Dowagiac senior Israel Villegas placed fifth with an 8-2 decision over Daniel Rosales of Alma. Villegas finished the year with a 49-7 record. In the 285 division, Dowagiac junior Cal Chapman pinned Belding's Isaac Casey in 2:20 to also finish fifth. Chapman finished the season with a 48-10 mark.

In girls action, Dowagiac freshman Cinthia Villegas finished seventh with a 16-3 major decision over sophomore Anna Beers of Traverse City West. Villegas finished her freshman campaign with a 20-5 record.
