Boys basketball roundup: Paynesville Bulldogs' big 2nd half beats BBE

Feb. 1—BROOTEN — Abe Brunner and the Paynesville Bulldogs dominated the second half on Thursday night.

On the road for a Central Minnesota Conference boys basketball game, Brunner scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to secure the Bulldogs' 74-51 victory over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

Up by three at halftime, Paynesville out-scored BBE 40-20 over the final 18 minutes. The Bulldogs' defense also limited the Jaguars to 31% shooting from the field for the game.

Brunner, a 6-foot-3 senior guard/forward, made 12 of his 17 shots (70.6%). He also had four steals and four rebounds.

Sophomore Reed Johnson hit four of his five 3-pointers in the opening half for the Bulldogs, finishing with 15 points. Bryce VanderBeek added 12 points and six boards.

Paynesville shot 51.8% in the victory.

BBE senior Luke Dingmann was one rebound away from a double-double. The 6-4 forward finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Kaden DeRoo scored 10 points.

The win moves the Bulldogs to 7-1 in the CMC while the Jaguars are 4-4 in conference play.

Paynesville plays host to Holdingford at 7 p.m.Tuesday at Paynesville. BBE next plays Browerville/Eagle Valley at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clarissa.

Wyatt Moehrle poured in 28 points and Landon Neiman and Noah Stommes each had 16 to lead Eden Valley-Watkins to the victory over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at Grove City.

The Eagles are ranked fourth in Class AA, according to the Minnesota Basketball News.

For ACGC, Kyler Pickle scored his 1,000th career point. The senior guard finished with 21, entering the game needing 20 for the milestone. He also had nine assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Marcus Forsythe added 22 points and Jonas Morrison scored 20 for the Falcons.

ACGC goes to Maple Lake at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Every player on Montevideo's bench scored in the Thunder Hawks' West Central Conference win over host Benson.

Cooper Dack hit five 3-pointers on the way to a Montevideo-best 17 points. Gannon Reidinger finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Braves' Harold Habben scored a game-high 22 points.

Montevideo plays Eden Valley-Watkins at 7 p.m. Monday at Eden Valley. Benson goes to Swanville at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Dawson-Boyd combined for 15 3-pointers in a Camden Conference win against Canby at the Dawson-Boyd Community Center at Dawson.

Drew Hjelmeland and Brayson Boike each had double-doubles for the second-ranked (Class A) Blackjacks. Hjelmeland finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Boike had 27 points and 10 boards. Gunner Liebl added 15 points in the victory.

Dawson-Boyd next against Castlewood, South Dakota at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Castlewood.

DeAndre Holloway, a 6-foot-7 senior forward, pumped in 31 points with 17 rebounds to help lead Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg past Yellow Medicine East at Kerkhoven.

Senior guard Jared Crotez had 23 points and sophomore guard Teagen Diederich added 19 points for the Fighting Saints.

Junior guard Eric Jimenez had 10 points for the Sting.

KMS plays host to Lac qui Parle Valley at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kerkhoven. YME next plays Lakeview at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Cottonwood.

Freshman forward Asher Wieberdink had a double-double in Central Minnesota Chrisitan's Camden Conference win against Lakeview at Prinsburg.

Wieberdink finished with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Drew Duininck followed up with 15 points and three steals for the Bluejays.

CMCS plays Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Prinsburg.

Sawyer Janssen had 23 points and nine rebounds and Isaac Post tossed in 17 points in MACCRAY's victory over Renville County West at Clara City.

The Wolverines out-scored the Jaguars 41-11 in the second half.

For RCW, Ryan Schrupp had 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.

MACCRAY next hosts Dawson-Boyd at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clara City. RCW next hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Renville.

Minnesota improved its record to 15-6 with the victory over Lac qui Parle Valley at Madison.

The Eagles fall to 7-11.

LQPV plays Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kerkhoven.

Grant Paffrath and Gavin Radabaugh each scored over 20 points in New London-Spicer's win over Minnewaska at New London.

Paffrath, a 6-foot-2 senior forward, had 24 points and nine rebounds. Gavin Radabaugh, a 5-7 senior guard, hit seven 3-pointers in a 23-point effort.

Owen Meulebroeck was the Lakers' top scorer with 20 points. He is a 6-3 junior forward/center.

Minnewaska goes to Sauk Centre at 5:45 p.m. Friday. NLS plays host to Litchfield at 7 p.m. Friday at New London.
