Boys basketball roundup: HLWW Lakers start strong to beat NLS Wildcats

Jan. 18—HOWARD LAKE — The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted boys basketball team used a strong first half to hold off New London-Spicer 72-66 Thursday night.

The Lakers built a 42-27 halftime lead over the Wildcats in the Wright County Conference West Division game, getting 28 points from Zachary Murphy. Alex Zimmermann added 16 points, eight rebounds, five steals and three blocks for HLWWW.

For NLS, Grant Paffrath had 29 points and two steals. Gavin Radabaugh added 10 points for the Wildcats,

Jonas Morrison scored a career-best 33 points and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City used a strong second half to beat Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Brooten.

Morrison, a senior forward, also had six assists and five steals for the Falcons, who trailed 45-39 after the first half. BBE made 10 3-pointers in the first 18 minutes.

Marcus Forsythe added 20 points and six rebounds, Jaxon Drange had 17 points and Kyler Pickler recorded 10 points, 12 assists, five rebounds and two steals for ACGC.

Hayden Sobiech and Kaden DeRoo each had 20 points for the Jaguars.

ACGC plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Royalton. BBE plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Maple Lake.

Paynesville had five players score in double figures as it stayed unbeaten in the Central Minnesota Conference with the victory at Kimball.

Bryce VanderBeek led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Abe Brunner scored 15, Brayden Pund had 13, Reed Johnson had 12 and Jackson Walker 10.

Bryant Knaus had 23 points and Owen Mortenson added 17 for the Cubs.

Paynesville leads the conference with a 5-0 record. Kimball is 1-4 in the CMC.

The Bulldogs play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eden Valley-Watkins. EVW is also 5-0 in the conference after beating Maple Lake 84-33 Thursday.

Thanks to a 40-27 halftime lead, Minnewaska got into the win column for the first time this season, beating Benson at Glenwood.

Tenzin Dahl led a trio of Lakers in double figures with 21 points. Marc Gruber scored 14 points, and Alex Panitzke had 12 points and seven assists.

"We played a complete game for the first time all year tonight and it feels a lot better when you can end up with a win afterwards," said Minnewaska head coach Zachary Traphagen. "Just very proud of the effort, the unselfishness and the heart that our guys played with all night. We avoided having the bad lapses offensively, and turned up the pressure defensively to play more of our style. We will continue to get back to work and not be satisfied with where we're at."

Benson plays at 7:15 p.m. Friday against Border West in Wheaton. Minnewaska plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barnesville.

Drew Duininck scored 22 points to help lift Central Minnesota Christian School at Minneota.

Micah Asake provided the Bluejays with 14 points. Asher Wieberdink had 10.

CMCS plays Southwest Minnesota Christian at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Prinsburg.

Alex Munson scored 27 points and Trevor Smith had 18 to help push Tracy-Milroy-Balaton past Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Tracy.

DeAndre Holloway led KMS with 28 points, adding 12 rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist. Teagen Diederich notched 18 points with three rebounds.

KMS next plays at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Eden Valley-Watkins.

Ortonville had four scorers in double figures in its victory against Yellow Medicine East at Granite Falls.

Cadyn Vanderwal and Quentin Kuefler both had 12 points and Isaac Brown and Connor Danielson each had 11 for the Trojans.

The Sting were led by DJ Whitebuffalo, who had 16 points and Drew Almich, who scored 15 and added 13 rebounds.

YME plays BOLD at 7:15 p.m. Monday in Granite Falls.

William Penkert scored 24 points and had 14 rebounds to help BOLD beat the Cedar Mountain Cougars at Olivia.

Jack Gross added 23 points with four assists and a pair of blocks for the Warriors.

BOLD next faces West Central Area at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Barrett.
