Boys Basketball: Pairings, results, recaps for the District One, 12 tournaments

District One Boys Basketball Playoffs

Class 6A (12 PIAA qualifiers)

Seventh-place game, Friday

(7) Central Bucks East 71, (24) Springfield-Delco 55: The Patriots (20-8) secured seventh place in the district with the victory, earning a PIAA first-round state playoff matchup with District 3 runner-up Chambersburg at a site to be determined on Saturday, March 9. Senior Jake Cummiskey led host East with 19 points, while seniors Dhruv Mukund and Tyler Dandrea added 14 and 13, respectively. The Patriots won their fourth straight SOL Colonial Division championship, tying the school record with the 1975-76 through 1978-79 squads.

11th-place game, Saturday

(15) Downingtown West 58, (8) Bensalem 45: The Owls (19-8) were led by seniors Jaidyn Moffitt and Antonio Morris with 13 points apiece. Morris scored all 13 of his in the second half, including a trio of 3-pointers. Bensalem finished seventh at districts the last time it made the state playoffs in 2021-22. The Owls will face District 3 champion Cumberland Valley in the first round of states on March 9. This year's team won its third SOL Patriot Division title in five years.

Fifth-place consolations, Tuesday

(6) Methacton 80, (7) Central Bucks East 73: The 19-8 Patriots will host Springfield-Delco for the seventh seed in the state tournament. Senior Tyler Dandrea led CB East with 23 points, while seniors Jake Cummiskey and Dhruv Mukund contributed 14 apiece. East ended up fifth at districts a year ago.

Ninth-place consolations, Tuesday

(13) Plymouth Whitemarsh 63, (8) Bensalem 54: The 19-7 Owls held a one-point halftime lead before being outscored 25-12 in the third quarter by visiting PW. Senior Jaidyn Moffitt led the Owls with 21 points and senior Micah White had 14.

(3) Spring-Ford 57, (15) Downingtown West 44

Championship, Saturday

(1) Lower Merion 57, (14) Garnet Valley 49

First-round consolations, Feb. 23

(8) Bensalem 69, (16) Conestoga 51: The 19-6 Owls punched their ticket to states with the victory, outscoring Conestoga by 15 points in the second half after leading by 3 (25-22) at intermission and trailing 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. Senior Jaidyn Moffitt had 22 points for Bensalem, while senior Antonio Morris contributed 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals, and senior Nate Cooper added 12 points.

(3) Spring-Ford 51, (11) Central Bucks West 43: The 19-8 Bucks ended up one win shy of qualifying for states one year after going 6-16. Senior Matt Engle led West with 14 points, while senior Sam Jankowski added 8.

(2) WC Henderson 68, (7) Central Bucks East 63: The 19-7 Patriots narrowed the gap to two points on a 3-pointer by senior Tyler Dandrea with 22 seconds remaining but could get no closer. East led by eight (35-27) at halftime before being outscored 23-9 in the third quarter. Senior Justin DiRoberto led the Patriots with 15 points on five 3-pointers, with seniors Jake Cummiskey and Dhruv Mukund scoring 11 and 10, respectively.

(7) Central Bucks East 49, (10) Perkiomen Valley 44: The Patriots (19-6) scored the game's final six points over the last 50 seconds to turn a one-point deficit into a victory and earn a repeat trip to the state playoffs. Seniors Tyler Dandrea and Jake Cummiskey led CB East with 13 points apiece. East made all four of its free throws down the stretch, with senior Justin DiRoberto and Cummiskey each converting a pair. Senior Miles Demby gave the Patriots the lead for good with a dunk off a steal with 38 seconds left.

(24) Springfield-Delco 46, (8) Bensalem 42: The 18-6 Owls received 13 points apiece from senior Jaidyn Moffitt and junior Amir Drummond.

First round, Feb. 16

(16) Conestoga 53, (17) Neshaminy 19: Senior Nate Townsend became the sixth boys player in school history to score 1,000 career points in 15-9 Neshaminy's road defeat. Townsend's team-high 10 points gave him exactly 1,000. Senior Brendan Styer had 16 points for Conestoga. Neshaminy had won nine of its last 10 before losing to Upper Dublin in the Suburban One League Tournament. It edged Conestoga 49-48 in a Jan. 29 non-league game behind 24 points from senior Emeer Coombs.

(24) Springfield-Delco 58, (9) Abington 42: Senior Jeremiah Lee scored 24 points to finish his career with 1,001 in the defeat. The Ghosts went 6-1 in their final seven regular season games.

(13) Plymouth Whitemarsh 77, (20) Council Rock South 50: Seniors Gabe Cerulli and Timmy Rahill led the Golden Hawks with 12 and 11 points, respectively. CR South finished 14-9 after going 5-17 in 2022-23.

(12) Cheltenham 47, (21) North Penn 41: Senior Norman Gee paced the Knights with 15 points.

(15) Downingtown West 68, (18) William Tennent 58: Tennent led 56-54 with a little over three minutes remaining but Downingtown West took control down the stretch. Seniors Chris D'Ambra (23 points) and Kirby Mooney (16) paced the Panthers. Mooney finished his high school career with a boys school-record 1,431 points. Junior Donovan Fromhartz led the Whippets with 33 points. The Panthers reached the district playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2003-04 and 2004-05.

(10) Perkiomen Valley 65, (23) Avon Grove 50

(14) Garnet Valley 57, (19) Harriton 48

(11) Central Bucks West 48, (22) Pennsbury 33: Senior Bowen Gugger had 16 points, while junior Roman Kulesa added 13 and senior Matt Engle chipped in 10 for the Bucks (19-7). Senior Connor Taddei led the Falcons with 10 points. West won the teams' regular season meeting 44-31 behind 15 points by Kulesa. Taddei had nine for Pennsbury.

Class 5A (6 PIAA qualifiers)

Quarterfinals, Feb. 21

(1) Unionville 72, (8) Upper Moreland 63: The Golden Bears (14-10) only trailed by two points at halftime but were outscored 22-15 in the third period. Senior Alex Best led UM with 19 points and hit five 3-pointers, while junior Colson Campbell added 10 and senior Sean Murphy had 9.

(2) Upper Dublin 44, (10) Penncrest 33

First-round consolations, Saturday

(5) Pottstown 70, (8) Upper Moreland 68: Abdul Jackson's basket at the buzzer gave host Pottstown the victory and prevented overtime. The 14-11 Golden Bears, who needed a win to earn a state berth, had tied it up with 5.6 seconds remaining on a driving bucket by sophomore Nate Best. Junior Colson Campbell led UM with 18 points, with junior Sean Murphy adding 12 points, junior Anthony Carson had 10 and senior Alex Best 9. The Golden Bears last qualified for states in 2021-22 after finishing fourth at districts.

(3) Radnor 34, (10) Penncrest 32

First round, Feb. 16

(8) Upper Moreland 79, (9) Holy Ghost Prep 76: Senior Alex Best (team-high 19 points) hit two free throws to give the Golden Bears (14-9) the lead for good after junior Adrien Varella (game-high 24 points) had put the Firebirds ahead 76-75 with 23 seconds left. Senior Sean Murphy added 14 points, junior Colson Campbell contributed 13 points and 4 steals, 2 of which came in the final minute, and freshman Brady Martin had 12 points for UM.

Junior Robbie Segarich scored 16 points and junior Zak Sharlin had 10 for Holy Ghost. The two teams hadn't met since the district playoffs a year ago, when host Holy Ghost prevailed 53-36 in the opening round.

Class 2A (2 PIAA qualifiers)

Semifinals, Feb. 20

(1) Dock Mennonite 36, (4) Church Farm 27: Dock (22-4) won for the 16th time in its last 17 games behind 14 points from senior Ethan Parr and 11 from junior Tony Martin.

(3) Delco Christian 85, (2) Faith Christian 68: Faith was led by Ky Hughes with 21 points, while freshman Jagger Verbit and senior Tyler Forscht added 18 apiece.

Final, Feb. 24

(1) Dock Mennonite 64, (3) Delco Christian 62: Head coach Mike Fergus and Dock held off Delco Christian to repeat as district champion and a first-round state playoff matchup with District 3 runner-up Halifax. Junior Tony Martin led the Pioneers (23-4) with 21 points and senior Vaughan Martin contributed 19. Dock improved to 3-0 this season against Delco Christian, which it downed 51-38 to win the BAL Tournament and 51-49 in the regular season.

Class A (1 PIAA qualifier)

Semifinals, Feb. 22

(1) Phil-Mont Christian 55, (4) Plumstead Christian 40: Plumstead, which won five of its last seven regular season games, received 11 points by junior Enzo Prozzillo, plus 10 apiece from seniors Phil Yallah and Jordan Eade.

Final, Feb. 24

District 12 Class 6A Playoffs

Third-place game, Tuesday (3 PIAA qualifiers)

Archbishop Wood (PCL 2) 65, Northeast (Public League 2) 43: Star senior Jalil Bethea tallied 23 points and hit all 13 of his free throws as the Vikings (16-8) earned another trip to the PIAA state playoffs. Wood will face the District One fifth-place team (Methacton) in the first round of states on Saturday, March 9. Senior Josh Reed added 12 points as Wood built a 32-point lead late in the third quarter before head coach Josh Mosco pulled his starters in a game at La Salle High.

The Vikings finished in a three-way tie for first place in the 2023-24 Philadelphia Catholic League regular season with Roman and Neumann-Goretti (each was 11-2). Wood won the District 12 third-place game a year ago 88-47 over Olney and advanced to the PIAA state semifinals before falling to Roman Catholic 66-56.

First round, Feb. 16
