Boyne City volleyball splits vs. Ski Valley foes, East Jordan collects wins

BOYNE CITY — The Boyne City volleyball team has worked on covering every corner of Northern Michigan on the schedule this season.

On Thursday night, the Ramblers got in a couple more matches against Northern Michigan foes, this time out of the Ski Valley Conference.

Welcoming in Johannesburg-Lewiston and Gaylord St. Mary, the Ramblers split for the night, falling to J-L and defeating St. Mary.

Against JoBurg to start, Boyne collected a 25-21 second set win, then fell 25-15 and 15-11 on both ends.

“We kept making errors at the net that didn’t help us at all,” Boyne coach Tyla Coates said. “Our serves were great and we played as aggressive as we always do. I think JoBurg came for revenge and got what they wanted.”

The Boyne City volleyball team welcomed in a pair of tough Ski Valley Conference opponents Thursday, ending the night better than it began with a split.

Against Gaylord St. Mary, things evened out for the Ramblers with wins of 25-12 and 25-14.

“The girls were having fun and every girl got in,” said Coates. “With tonight being one of our last games we wanted to make it memorable.”

Ava Tarsi led with 33 assists, 13 digs and an ace, Elly Wilcox had 15 kills and four digs, Josie Wilson had 11 kills, Ameilia Dunstan had five kills and five ace and Aubrey Burns had 15 digs, five aces and two assists.

Brianna Ager then added nine digs and a kill, Eliana Michael had three digs and served at 100 percent and Sawyer Cadarette impressed Coates again on the night with her play.

“She was excited both games, happy to be here but determined to win,” said Coates. “She played aggressive at the net and all around I think played one of her best games.”

Boyne City will get in more Northern Michigan action this weekend when they head to the McBain tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21.

East Jordan 3, Kalkaska 1

EAST JORDAN — The East Jordan volleyball team is enjoying a nice late-season surge, racking up wins over both Kalkaska and Central Lake this week.

The Red Devils earned a 3-1 win over Kalkaska earlier in the week within Lake Michigan Conference play, which head coach Laura Snyder came away impressed in.

“The girls played the best match of the season last night,” said Snyder. “They started a little slow, but as they started playing together, they gained momentum and really elevated their level of play.”

June Kirkpatrick came through with a 16-kill performance that also included four digs. Meryn Vrondran also had 23 digs, three aces and two assists, Lily Snyder had nine kills, two aces and three digs and Sydney Guerriero had nine aces, nine digs and an assist.

Lillian Stone then had 35 assists, 11 digs and two aces, Lindsey Jibson had eight kills and nine digs, Alyssa Sherman finished with six kills and eight digs and Izzy Boyer had five kills.

Against Central Lake Thursday, the Red Devils continued their strong week with wins of 25-9, 25-13 and 25-17.

“We have a more experienced team with more upperclassmen than Central Lake has, which gave us an advantage,” added Snyder. “We are happy to take away two wins this week.”
