Boyne, Charlevoix, EJ boys all win; Harbor girls tighten LMC race

KALKASKA — Scoring wasn’t exactly filling the book Tuesday night for the Boyne City boys’ basketball team, though the Ramblers did pick up a 39-32 win over host Kalkaska.

“We got the win, that's all we can ask for,” Boyne City coach Robby Jensen said. “There were times where we were playing pretty well and then there were times where we struggled, but most importantly we got the W.”

Jaden Alger led the way with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, Chas Stanek had 10 points and eight rebounds and Drew Neer had eight points.

The Ramblers (10-6, 6-4) will hit the road to rival Charlevoix up next on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Charlevoix 59, TC St. Francis 53

CHARLEVOIX — A season-high 19 points and five rebounds from Ryan Pearl and some strong rebounding helped the Charlevoix boys top Traverse City St. Francis for the second time this season in a 59-53 win.

“We knew St. Francis had size, we needed to do a better job on the glass and we did in the second half,” Charlevoix coach Anthony Troshak said. “Assistant Coach Cody Crain did a great job of making sure we had the matchups we wanted on the floor. Ryan Pearl really stepped up and did a good job diving to the rim and his teammates found him on drives. We moved the ball well on offense. It was a good win vs. a great program that is always well-prepared and well-coached.”

Joe Gaffney added nine points, five rebounds and four assists and Hudson Vollmer had 14 points for the Rayders.

Charlevoix (12-3, 6-3) now welcomes in Boyne City on Thursday, Feb. 1.

East Jordan 59, Grayling 44

EAST JORDAN — Korbyn Russell continued his solid run with the East Jordan boys, coming through with 17 points and seven rebounds in a 59-44 win over Grayling Tuesday.

“Lucas (Stone) and Korbyn were huge with their aggressiveness on both ends,” EJ coach Nate Dzwik said. “Korbyn hit a buzzer beater at the end of three to take the lead from 10 to 13 points and gave us a ton a momentum. We got great minutes from the guys on the bench tonight who stepped in huge with some great rotations.”

Stone added 18 points to lead, while Ryder Malpass had eight and five rebounds, along with five assists.

East Jordan (6-8, 2-6) will now travel to Elk Rapids on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Harbor Light 70, Boyne Falls 34

BOYNE FALLS — Harbor Light Christian continued to roll within Northern Lakes play, coming through with a 70-34 win over Boyne Falls Tuesday.

Landon Jakeway led with 21 points, David Chamberlin had 14 and Kirk Rose scored 11.

The Swordsmen got off to a 26-6 lead after the opening quarter, then scored another 23 in the third.

Keaton Matelski led Boyne Falls with 10 and JT Grenier had nine.

Harbor Light (13-2, 7-1) will next welcome Burt Lake NMCA on Monday, Feb. 5, while Boyne Falls (2-11, 1-8) heads to Ellsworth on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Ellsworth 63, Wolverine 47 

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth boys played their first home game in four times out on the court and pulled in a 63-47 win over Wolverine for the home fans.

Patrick Puroll led the way with 29 points for the Lancers, while Cameron Snyder scored 23 points, a new career-high.

For Wolverine, Kaden Waldie led the way with 25 points.

Ellsworth (5-9, 4-3) will next host Boyne Falls on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Mackinaw City 90, Burt Lake NMCA 66 

MACKINAW CITY — Trystan Swanson led the way with 30 points, while Lucas Bergstrom added 29 in a 90-66 victory for the Mackinaw City boys over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian.

Along with the two high scorers for the Comets, Myran Thompson scored 14 points and Braylon Currie added 11.

Burt Lake was led by Josiah Brabson’s 32 and Josh Ferraiolio’s 16.

Mackinaw City (9-6, 6-2) will now travel to Engadine on Monday, Feb. 5 up next.

GIRLS BASKETBALL 

Midland Dow 55, Petoskey 50 

MIDLAND — Meeting Midland Dow on the road Tuesday, the Petoskey girls’ basketball team took a fourth straight loss in a 55-50 final against the Chargers.

Junior forward Caitlyn Matelski stood out with a 26-point performance against Dow, a team still within the honorable mention list of the AP rankings in Division 1.

Petoskey also had Quinn Matthews score seven and Haidyn Wegmann add five, as they again played down chunks of the lineup Tuesday.

Petoskey (8-7) travels to Traverse City Central on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Harbor Springs 48, Elk Rapids 41 

HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Springs girls’ basketball team made things a lot tighter within the Lake Michigan Conference race Tuesday with a 48-41 win over Elk Rapids.

It evened things up at 7-1 atop the LMC between the two and was a seventh straight win for the Rams.

Olivia Flynn led with 19 points, Bryleigh Rummer scored 10 and Sophie Barnadyn and Stefi Reskevics each had seven.

Harbor Springs (11-2, 7-1) now brings in Grayling on Friday, Feb. 2 up next.

Boyne City 53, Kalkaska 46

BOYNE CITY — Boyne City’s girls snapped a two-game skid Tuesday with a 53-46 win over visiting Kalkaska.

Addy Burns led the way with 17 points for the Ramblers, Delaney Vollmer scored 12 points and Braydin Noble scored 11 points. Elly Wilcox also added seven.

Boyne City (7-7, 4-4) will return to the court on Friday, Feb. 2 against rival Charlevoix.

Charlevoix 26, TC St. Francis 16

TRAVERSE CITY — It’s not how the Charlevoix girls drew up Tuesday night going, thought they’ll take the win any way they can after a 26-16 final over Traverse City St. Francis.

Abbey Wright finished with nine points and nine rebounds, Bayani Collins had eight points and Anna Kemp added seven steals.

Charlevoix (7-6, 5-3) will head to Boyne City on Friday, Feb. 2 for a rivalry matchup.

Grayling 50, East Jordan 38 

GRAYLING — An under-the-weather day around the lineup for the East Jordan girls’ basketball team brought the Red Devils a 50-38 road loss Tuesday against Grayling.

“I am proud of my girls,” EJ coach Tim Smith said. “We are just devastated with sickness right now. We had some kids who couldn't go today and many girls go shouldn't have played, but gutted it out.”

June Kirkpatrick finished with 17 points to lead, while Lilian Stone had nine.

East Jordan (6-5, 2-4) will now travel to Central Lake on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Mackinaw City 50, Burt Lake NMCA 32 

MACKINAW CITY — The Mackinaw City girls moved to 12-0 on the season with a 50-32 win over Burt Lake NMCA Tuesday.

Kenzlie Currie led with 15 points for Mackinaw, Jersey Beauchamp had 12 points and seven rebounds, Gracie Beauchamp had nine points, 11 assists and five steals and Kerry-Ann Ming had seven points and nine rebounds.

The Comets (12-0, 8-0) will next welcome in Alba on Wednesday, followed by Rudyard on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
