Bowman County bounces Beulah, 60-28

Jan. 20—SOUTHWEST NORTH DAKOTA — The Bowman County Bulldogs seemingly cannot be harnessed this season, with the boys team a perfect 10-0 overall and 4-0 in Division B/Region 3-District 5 and the girls standing tall at 10-1 and 6-0, respectively.

That dominance continued on Friday, Jan. 19 as BCHS more-than doubled-up Beulah at home, 60-28, on the strength of brilliant performances from the Bulldogs' "big-three" of junior guard Sophia Headley, senior forward Jaci Fischer and junior guard Raegen Honeyman. The three have been as consistent as a metronome during the current calendar and all three were in double-figures again last night.

The Miners (1-12 overall) couldn't get out of single-digits in three of four quarters in the game, as the Bulldogs buried the visitors under a mountain of points and singular defensive pressure, throughout. Bowman County raced to 20 points in the first quarter and 13 more in the second while limiting Beulah to only 12, combined, as Honeyman scored 8 of her double-digit 12 points in the first 16 minutes and Fischer notched 9. Headley was solid as well with 6 points and Julie Sarsland scored 7 of her 9 points in the first two quarters.

No Beulah athlete could manage more than a field goal in the first half for the visitors, and none ended up in double-digits during the contest.

Outside-shooting took over after the halftime break for BCHS, as Fischer drained a pair of 3-pointers and Honeyman also found her mark from behind the arc, while Headley went on a tear and scored 10 second-half points — on her way to 16 — and Fischer poured in 8 of her game-high 17.

Next-up for Bowman County will be a Saturday, Jan. 20 matinee with Belle Fourche, SD, with the road-trip to DB/R3-D5 rivals Belfield following that game on Jan. 23. Meanwhile, Beulah will be headed to Shiloh Christian for a Division A-Region 4 showdown.

In another non-district, Friday, Jan. 19 matchup, Richardton-Taylor (6-7 overall, 2-2 in District 5) came up short versus District 6 Washburn at home, 50-42, despite double-digit scoring from three different Raider athletes on the night. After coming out of the gate with 29 points in the first half of play, RTHS went cold from the field and were limited to only 13 points in the second half and were upended by an 18-8 advantage for the Cardinals down the stretch in the final frame.

Junior AshLynn Christensen continued her impressive hot streak with 11 points in the opening 16 minutes and junior forward Jenna Schutt was solid with 9 of her 14 points, which tied for game-highs with Christensen. The Raiders also were effective from the free-throw line, converting 6-of-8 in the first half and 9-of-12 in the second.

But the overwhelming problem was a lack of field-goals for the home-team in the final two quarters, dropping in a grand-total of 2 while watching the Cardinals (9-3, 2-1) score at will — particularly from behind the arc, where they dropped in 3 in the second half.

RTHS junior forward Mariska Krank was the final player in double-digits for the Raiders at 11.

Next-up for the Raiders will be a home-game versus Flasher on Tuesday, Jan. 23 in DB/R3-D5 action.
