New Boston Huron pulls out Huron League boys golf jamboree

MONROE — It looks like a great race is brewing for the Huron League golf championship.

The league held its first jamboree of the season Thursday at Green Meadows Golf Course and the top five teams were separated by four strokes.

New Boston Huron took first with 334, St. Mary Catholic Central won a tiebreaker for second place after tying Grosse Ile with 335, Airport shot 336 and Flat Rock 338.

“It was tight, very tight,” Huron coach Eric Clark said.

“It was a battle all day,” said SMCC coach Jeff Kansier. “I knew it would be close, but not that close.”

Riverview (358), Milan (384) and Jefferson (423) rounded out the field.

Huron’s Nick Kosiba and Brayden Siders of Airport tied for medalist honors with 75.

Cameron Grant and Tony Trupiano each shot 86s for Huron and Johnathan Lerette added an 87.

“The supporting cast all did really, really well,” Clark said.

SMCC’s Drew Vuich tied for fourth at 78.

“Drew Vuich was outstanding,” Kansier said.

Vuich was supported by Thomas Rivard and John Beddoes with 84 and Domeneic Marvaso with 89.

Rounding out the lineup for Airport were Jake Trythall (84), Aaron Maddick (86) and Kenneth Stucki (95).

Top shooters for Flat Rock were Ben Scully (83), Joel Scully and Mitchell Smith (84) and Laran Rogier (87).

Milan’s Max Jenness shot 79 and Been Peer led Jefferson with 97.

PREP BASEBALL

Szalay plates winner

FLAT ROCK — Evan Szalay doubled home a run in the seventh inning to give Flat Rock a 2-1 walk-off win over Riverview on Friday.

Szalay had two of the five hits for the Rams.

Mike Giroux and Adam Szalay combined on a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

SMCC thumps Jefferson

NEWPORT — Drew Bylow and Riley Sommer drove in two runs each as St. Mary Catholic Central cruised past Jefferson 13-1 Friday.

Anthony Caladino and Brennan Runyon logged two hits each to support strong pitching by Cameron Cole.

“This was a good team win for us,” SMCC coach Jared Janssen said. “We are showing some signs of improvement on the bases and in small ball.”

Huron squeezes out win

CARLETON — Jackson Surma’s squeeze bunt in the seventh inning plated the winning run as New Boston Huron nipped Airport 4-3 Friday.

“A perfect suicide squeeze,” Huron coach Phil Yancey said.

Connor Grant went 3-for-3 to lead the offense and Myles Grace added two hits, including a triple. Micah Smith struck out 10 to pick up the win for Huron (9-1 overall, 3-0 Huron League).

Jonathan Daniels went 3-for-3 and Seth Jones and Sean Langton added two hits each for 3-3 Airport.

Drummond leads Airport

CARLETON — RaeAnn Drummond struck out 11 to earn the win and helped herself with two hits and two RBIs in a 7-0 win over Grosse Ile Friday night.

Peyton Zajac also logged two hits and two RBIs and Jillian Baker had two hits.

“A great team win,” Airport coach Jess Irwin said.

Dean helps herself

MONROE — Winning pitcher Faith Dean went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI to lead St. Mary Catholic Central to a 10-5 victory over Jefferson Friday.

Camryn Geen had two hits, including a home run, and Abby Lechy went 2-for-2 for the Kestrels. Braelyn Runyon closed the game with five strikeouts.

Julia Perry and Cameron Carter had two hits each for Jefferson.

PREP SOCCER

Another hat for Emelian

DEARBORN — Gabby Emelian recorded her second consecutive hat trick as New Boston Huron stopped Dearborn Divine Child 4-0 Friday.

Ava Banko scored the other goal, Rylie Cassette and Maggie Warden were credited with assists and Brooke Burke recorded her third shutout.

“Addison Dolencic, Lily Cholette, Cali Eaton and Nhi Vo were superb in defending while the two sophomores Ava Banko and Maggie Mentzer controlled the whole middle,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said.

PREP LACROSSE

Bedford’s Dlugosielski hot

ANN ABOR — Blake Dlugosielski, Brady Weirich and Cameron Barber scored three goals each to lead Bedford to an 11-9 win over Ann Arbor Huron on Friday.

Brennan McIntire scored the other two goals and added four assists.

Dlugosielski scored 10 goals in three games this week.

TEMPERANCE — Bedford’s girls pulled out a 6-5 win over Detroit Cass Tech on Friday night.
