BoCoPreps 10&10: Week 7

Jan. 29—Each full week of the winter season, BoCoPreps will highlight 10 teams and 10 athletes that had exceptional performances. Readers are encouraged to submit nominations to bwnew@prairiemountainmedia.com.

10 teams

Broomfield boys' and girls' wrestling: The boys had five top-three finishes over the weekend, leading to an area-best fourth-place finish at the Front Range League Tournament. August Soto won the 106-pound title, while Poudre won the tournament. The girls finished an area-best seventh at the Chatfield War Horse Invite Saturday, led by a second-place finish from Shayla Martinez (170).

Broomfield boys' and girls' basketball: The Eagles went undefeated last week in hoops. The boys beat Rocky Mountain in overtime, led by 19 points from Shyya Martinez, and 11 points and 11 rebounds from Blaes Kane. It shot 55% as a team in a 39-point win over Northglenn Friday. The girls beat Rocky Mountain in its lone game of the week, getting 32 combined points on 11-of-14 shooting from sophomores Paige Gilpatrick and EJ Harper.

Centaurus girls' swimming: The Warriors beat Greeley West in a dual Thursday, led by a pair of individual wins from Virginia Walsh, Kieren Berg and Brayde Patik. In last week's 4A state projections by PrepSwimCo, Broomfield, Centaurus and Monarch were slotted to finish inside the top five.

Frederick girls' basketball: The Golden Eagles have won seven in a row, pushing their season record to 12-4 and Longs Peak League mark to 9-2. Around a pair of double-digit wins, Zoe Wittler had 18 points in a 55-50 win over Mountain View Tuesday.

Holy Family girls' basketball: The Tigers regrouped after their loss at Mead on Jan. 19, beating Greeley West, Windsor and Silver Creek by wide margins last week. Against 5A 2023 runner-up Windsor Thursday, Gracie Ward went 3 of 4 from deep, scoring 14 in the win.

Legacy boys' and girls' wrestling: The boys' team had two individual champions and finished seventh at the Front Range League Tournament over the weekend. Matthew Clifton won at 126s, and Quinn Funk continued his unblemished senior season, beating Fairview's Sam Benton by a 1-0 decision in the 215 finals. The girls won duals over Skyview and Poudre last week, then finished eighth at the Chatfield War Horse Invite Saturday, one spot behind Broomfield.

Wrestling: Legacy's Clifton, Erie's Waneka among champs at Front Range League meet

Legacy girls' basketball: The Lightning won three straight last week, pulling up their record to 5-10 on the season. Olivia Mortensen averaged 26 points and 9.7 boards on the week.

Mead boys' wrestling: The Mavericks won the 24-team Duff Seaney Invitational Saturday, claiming four individual titles. Otto Black (138s), Leister Bowling IV (175), Dalton Berg (190) and Grant Gordon (285) all won.

Silver Creek boys' basketball: The Raptors (15-2) responded well to a blowout loss at Windsor earlier in the month, winning their last four games. They went on the road and won at Longmont and Holy Family last week, while beating Greeley West at home. They're one game back of Windsor in the NCAC standings.

Skyline boys' basketball: The Falcons (7-7) have won three consecutive games for the first time since February of 2022, winning road games over Fort Morgan, Northridge and Roosevelt.

Kyle Blauch, Boulder boys' basketball: The senior recorded a 20-20 double-double last week against Westminster, going for 26 points and 20 rebounds. He had 22 points and 12 boards in a loss to Poudre Friday.

Spencer Brown, Fairview boys' basketball: Brown fueled a pair of wins last week, scoring 35 on 64% shooting against Mountain Range Tuesday, before having 22 against Fossil Ridge Friday.

Ingrid Lorton, Centaurus girls' basketball: The junior had 13 points, eight boards and a career-high eight blocks in a loss to Greeley Central on Tuesday. Her eight blocks were one more than her entire sophomore total.

Abram Moore, Holy Family boys' wrestling: The senior won the 215-pound bracket at the 24-team Duff Seaney Invitational Saturday. In the finals, he pinned Mead's William Eilers in 2:57.

Elsa Nygren, Jefferson Academy girls' basketball: The junior was 10 of 16 from the field Wednesday, scoring 24 points in a win over Forge Christian. She is averaging 12.5 PPG this season.

Mason Shore, Centaurus boys' wrestling: Shore won the 190-pound bracket at the 20-team Mile High Classic Saturday. He pinned his first three opponents before winning the final by technical fall.

Juliet Slater, Erie girls' basketball: The sophomore went 9 of 14 from the field Saturday, scoring a career-high 25 points to lead Erie past Glenwood Springs.

Dawson Smith, Jefferson Academy boys' basketball: The freshman hit seven 3s Saturday, scoring a career-high 23 points in a win over Peak to Peak. His previous high in points was 11. He'd never made more than one 3 in a game before Saturday.

Hunter Waneka, Erie boys' wrestling: The junior won the 132-pound bracket at the Front Range League Tournament over the weekend. It was his fourth straight tournament victory, previously winning the War Horse Invite (Jan. 20), Jaguar Invite (Jan. 13) and Gary Daum Classic (Jan. 6).

Sienna Williams, Monarch girls' basketball: The freshman recorded her first triple-double Friday, finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 61-57 loss at 6A top-10 Horizon. Four days earlier, she came up one block shy of the milestone, totaling 12 points and 11 rebounds.
