Bluefield volleyball outlasts Graham in five-set clash

Oct. 4—BLUEFIELD — Cara Brown had 12 service aces and banged out 13 kills and the Bluefield volleyball team collected a 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 17-25, 16-14 victory over visiting Graham in an extremely hard-fought five set victory at Bluefield High School on Monday.

Brown also had two blocks for the Lady Beavers, who have won three of their last six matches.

Desi Jackson had eight kills and seven blocks for Bluefield. Catalina Dalton popped up 17 assists. Cali Waddell went on 6-0 service run in the final set to prime the pump for the victory.

Bluefield returns to action on Oct. 12 for Senior Night against Mount View. Junior varsity starts at 5:30 p.m. The varsity game will start approximately 6:45 p.m.

RICHLANDS, Va. — Kira Vance had eight kills and distributed 20 assists and the Lady Blue Tornado beat the Lady Rebels 25-3, 25-4, 25-10 in non-district action on Monday.

Hannah Ward had seven kills, three assists and two service aces and Katie Beth Cordle had four kills and six assists for Richlands.

Irelyn Osborne had five aces, four assists and two kills for the Tornado. Emma Absher had seven assists and two kills and Emma Phipps had seven aces, a dig and an assist.

The Richlands junior varsity won 25-10, 25-9.

honored by WVSSAC

LINDSIDE — James Monroe varsity boys basketball coach Matt Sauvage, who led the Mavericks to their second consecutive WVSSAC Class A state basketball championship last March, was recently named West Virginia Coach of the Year in the sport of boys basketball.

The award makes Sauvage eligible to be considered for the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) sectional and national coaching honors.

Sectional and national winners will be announced in January of 2024.

Princeton up to No. 3 in Class AAA poll

The unbeaten Princeton Tigers (6-0) have moved up to No. 3 in the WVSSAC Class AAA football poll with a rating of 12.33.

Cabell Midland (6-0) sits at No 1 (13.67) and Huntington (5-0) at No. 2 (13.4). Parkersburg South (4-1) is at No. 4 (12.16). Hurricane (4-1) which plays at Princeton on Friday night is No. 9 (11.12).

In the Class AA poll, Bluefield (2-3) has moved up to No. 19 (7.06). Roane County (6-0) is at No. 1 (11.83) and North Marion (4-1) is at No. 2 (11.3).

In the Class A poll, James Monroe (4-0) remains at No. 1 (9.0) although Williamstown (6-0) has moved up in to a tie at the top spot with a 9.0 rating. Tucker County (6-0) is at No. 3 (8.5).
