Blue Jays Grady Anderson, Damien Cross get wins on Senior Night

Feb. 1—JAMESTOWN — Through January there wasn't a win at Jerry Meyer Arena for the Jamestown High School wrestling team.

Then February hit.

The Blue Jays closed out their home schedule with a 37-26, senior night win over Watford City on Thursday. Jamestown is slated to take the mat again on Friday, at Bismarck Legacy's triangular. The triangular is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

"It felt great, especially for our two seniors Grady (Anderson) and Damien (Cross)," JHS head coach Patrick Schlosser said. "They've worked so far. Damien was out all last year so it's great to see him come back and he's on a little bit of a win streak now.

"Grady had one of the tougher opponents that he's had this year (tonight) and he wrestled a great match and really put a lot of distance in between himself and (Ethan) Dennis."

Anderson's match was the final nail in the coffin Thursday night. The No. 1 wrestler at 152 pounds topped Watford's Ethan Dennis by a 10-0 major. The win was Anderson's 38th of the season.

Cross' win against Hayden Pastrano came by a 4-3 decision. The senior's final match at Jerry Meyer Arena was a physical one that lasted right up until the final buzzer. The win over the freshman was Cross' third-straight victory.

After the first two matches, scores were tied at three points apiece.

Then Josh Dickerman stepped on the mat.

It took five minutes but Dickerman eventually got the best of Kyler Miller and pinned him to get the Jays up to nine points.

"Josh has been ready to do that — he's a junior and he got his moment tonight and he did not let it go past him," Schlosser said. "It was really cool to watch him do that in front of his home crowd."

Jaxsen Morris followed up Dickerman's pin with another one for the Blue Jays. The freshman pinned Lewis Lawson at the 35-second mark of the opening period. The freshman flipped Lewis Lawson on his back early and not long after he had racked up six points for the Blue Jays.

"It was great — we had some kids really step up," Schlosser said.

A forfeit by Watford City in the 107-pound bracket put the Jays up 21-9 but a pin of the Blue Jays' starting 114-pounder, Jack Schauer, brought the dual back within six.

After the 121-pound match, Jamestown was only leading by one.

Watford City's Rowdy Mott notched a technical fall against Brock Michaelson which upped the Wolves' score by five points.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, after the mid-weights, they would need more than one point to catch up with the Jays.

AJ Matzke, Lucas Schlepuetz and Josh Redfearn cleaned up in the 127, 133 and 139-pound matches, scoring a collective 12 points to put them up 33-20.

Jamestown and Watford City split the last two matches of the night.

"We just need to keep competing — win or lose — we need to keep competing and make sure that we get better every time," Schlosser said. "Watching them get better on and off the mat is really fun — it's probably the best part of coaching. It's fun watching them grow."
