Bloomington area high school roundup for Dec. 26-30

Here's a rundown of high school athletic events going on for the week of Dec. 26-30 as reported to the Herald-Times.

Saturday, Dec. 30

Wrestling

AL SMITH CLASSIC: Evan Roudebush (21-2) finished up a strong run to third place at 165 pounds with a 5-0 win over Bellmont's Duke Myers (27-2). It was 4-0 after the first period. Myers won regional and semistate titles last year en route to seventh in the state at 170.

MOORESVILLE HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Owen Valley's Branson Weaver kept his perfect record intact while sweeping to the title at 144 pounds. Weaver (21-0) won his semifinal 4-0 then took care of Yorktown's Wyatt Hoppes (20-3) with a pin in 1:57 for the title. At 285, Dylan Hale (18-4) took fifth, getting a reversal with 11 seconds left for the 6-4 win over Mooresville's Josh Cambron. Hale lost his semi 9-7, giving up an escape and takedown in the final 17 seconds. At 120, Eli Collier was 8th. Edgewood's Michael Neidigh (21-4) claimed fifth place at 150 with a 7-1 win. A three-point nearfall in the second period gave him a 5-0 lead. Neidigh lost his semi 7-0 and then was beaten by pin 3:51 before bouncing back in the final against Carmel's Jackson Schmidt. At 120, John Orman lost 4-2 in overtime and grabbed seventh with a 4-3 win, getting a takedown with 1:06 left. North's two finalists were Cael Hickok at 157 and Jeremiah Casillas at 165 and each finished fourth. Hickok lost his third-place match 9-2, while Casillas was pinned early in the second period. Earlier, Hickok won 9-7 with a reversal in the last 10 seconds in a 12-point third, then got a forfeit. Casillas got forfeit and pin to earn a rematch with Terre Hhaute South's Coy Bender, who beat him 10-0 earlier in the tourney.

INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS WRESTLING (Floyd Central Regional): Several area wrestlers earned spots in the Mooresville Semistate next week. Top-four finishers were — 100 pounds: 4. Halle Sanders, E; 105: 2. Katelyn Holmes, E; 110: 2. Lila Pierce, S; 120: 3. Faith Hand, S; 130: 3. Abigail Goodwin, S; 135: 1. Aaliyah White, OV; 140: 3. Zoey Zambrano, S; 145: 1. Victoria Moore, S; 155: 2. Kaylee Minton, S; 170: 2. LaShell Murphy, S; 190: 3. Jaclyn Hillenburg, S; 235: 3. Ayrica DeHart, E. Terre Haute North won the team title with 93 points while South was next at 83. Edgewood was eighth at 59.

Friday, Dec. 29

Boys' basketball

FISHERS TOURNAMENT: North (3-7) finished the tournament strong after a long day Thursday, topping Lawrence Central 63-55 for fifth place in the consolation final. The Bears (5-5) have beaten both Franklin Central and Zionsville. No. 1 Fishers (11-0) won the title over Chesterton, 74-42.

RICHMOND TOURNAMENT: South (6-5) earned a split on the day to settle for sixth. The Panthers opened with a 50-31 rout of East Central before falling to 3A No. 10 NorthWood, last year's state champs, 59-47. Richmond trampled Heritage Christian, 61-34, for the title.

WABASH VALLEY CLASSIC: Edgewood ended up settling for fourth place for the third time in four years, falling to Parke Heritage, 58-44. The Wolves pulled away late, leading 18-11 after one period and 30-27 at halftime before taking a 43-38 lead into the fourth.

CLAY CITY TOURNAMENT: Owen Valley (3-6) ended its stay with a 58-35 romp over Riverton Parke for fifth place, snapping a three-game losing streak. Derrek Atkinson was named to the All-Tourney team. Tri-West edged the host Eels, 47-44, for the title.

Girls' basketball

NORTH DECATUR TOURNAMENT: Edgewood (9-6) had a strong opener, taking care of the host Chargers, 49-43. A 14-2 run in the second quarter erased a 12-7 deficit. Madi Bland had 18 points (10 in the fourth) and Ally Bland 15 for Edgewood, which survived 11 of 23 free throw shooting. The title match was a different story as an older Shelbyville squad used its half-court trap to bury the Mustangs, 66-28. The Bears (9-6) led 33-13 by halftime. Macey Crider had 14 points for the Mustangs, but no one else had more than four. Ava Wilson had 18 of her 24 points in the first half for Shelbyville.

TOBY YOHO CLASSIC: With an altered schedule due to Loogootee pulling out, Eastern Greene (9-5) had just one game, taking care of Trinity Lutheran, 50-44. The T-Birds led 19-13 at the break. It was 30-27 going to the fourth then went 12-of-15 at the line to seal it. Keylee Hudson had 24 points, Mallorie Elliott 10 and Bianca Wyatt nine for Eastern. Elliott was named to the all-tournament team. Owen Valley (4-13) was thumped by Tecumseh, 60-17, then faced Martinsville for seventh place. The Arties pulled out a 35-29 win. Springs Valley stopped Brownstown Central's tourney win streak at 15 in the semifinals, but lost to 2A No. 1 North Knox, 48-36 in the final. BC took third.

Wrestling

MOORESVILLE HOLIDAY CLASSIC: There are seven wrestlers, three from Owen Valley and two each from North and Edgewood, who will return for Saturday's finals. Just three are in the semifinals, the rest in consolation brackets. Owen Valley will have Branson Weaver in the semifinals at 144 after going 3-0 and the same for Dylan Hale at 285. At 120, OV's Eli Collier and Edgewood's John Orman are both in the consolation bracket. Edgewood's Michae Neidigh is the other semifinalist, going 3-0 at 150. North's Cael Hickok (157) and Jeremiah Casillas (165) are also still alive with one loss. Terre Haute South is in first with 156 points. 12. Owen Valley 83 20. Bloomington North 71 26. Edgewood 50. Other North results include Kanye Roberts-Gray, 2-2 at 120; Cas Crevello 3-2 at 126; Trae Hopkins, 3-2 at 132; Miguel Tedrow, 3-2 at 144; and Darren Burns, 2-2 at 150. Going 2-2 for Edgewood were Cayleb Sides at 126; Cam Richardson at 165 and Trenton Fender at 215. The Mustangs forfeited at 106, 113, 132, 175, 190, 285. OV saw Austin Boltinghouse 2-2 at 106; Trey Reuter 3-2 at 113; Noah Pendleton 2-2 at 132; Quaid Hinshaw 2-2 at 157 and Collin Willen 2-2 at 175. Complete results at trackwrestling.com

MISHAWAKA AL SMITH CLASSIC: Just one South wrestler will return for Saturday's finals, Evan Roudebush at 165 pounds. Roudebush (20-1) bullied his way to the semifinals where he'll face Waylon Cressell of Warren Central (22-0) in the semis. The other semi pits top-ranked Anthony Rinehart of Crown Point (12-3) and Duke Meyers of Bellmont (26-0). Interestingly, each one is the top-ranked wrestlers in the four semistate brackets, Roudebush at Evansville, Rinehart at East Chicago, Cressell at New Castle and Meyers at Fort Wayne. Other top Panther results included Jaxsen Jean going 3-2 at 106; Wyatt Cooksey 2-2 at 144, falling 14-13 in the quarterfinals; and Mason Grubb 2-2 at 190. Complete results at trackwrestling.com

CENTER GROVE HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Center Grove won with 738 points, University School from Ohio had 592, South 461 and North 356. The meet was run in college events. CENTER GROVE HOLIDAY CLASSIC: University School from Ohio won with 662 points to 499½ for Center Grove, 486½ for North and 456 for South. The meet was run in college events. Thursday, Dec. 28

Boys' basketball

WABASH VALLEY CLASSIC: Edgewood jumped out to a stunning 24-8 lead and still led 26-18 at halftime, but Terre Haute North (7-3), like it did against Bloomington South, stormed out in the second half and pulled out a 51-45 win. It sets up an all-Terre Haute final. The game was tied after three as the Patriots won the fourth quarter. It was a 46-43 THN lead with a minute to go, but Edgewood couldn't get back on top. Mustangs (5-6) will face Parke Heritage (8-3) for third place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

RICHMOND TOURNAMENT: Bloomington South opened with a 57-42 win over Bellmont. The Panthers (5-3) led 33-24 at half. But, South was tripped up in the quarterfinals by Greensburg (6-2), 59-50. It will be the first time South has not made it to the title game. South will play East Central (4-3), which fell to Richmond 51-28, at 11 a.m. on Friday and then come back for the fifth or seventh place game at 5 p.m.

FISHERS TOURNAMENT: Bloomington North suffered a 94-48 pounding by the No. 1 team in the state, Fishers (9-0), in the quarterfinals. Luke Lindeman had a game high 31 points. North trailed 48-29 at the break. The Cougars (2-7) came back at 7:15 in the consolation semifinals to shoot down Evansville Bosse (3-6), 70-64. North led 25-23 and 37-31 after two, then just 54-52 going into the fourth. Bosse was handed a 69-66 defeat in the first round on a last-second 3. North will play Lawrence Central (5-4), a 70-64 winner over Jeffersonville in the other consolation game, in the finals at 3:45 on Friday.

CLAY CITY TOURNAMENT: Owen Valley (2-6) started pool play with a 57-54 loss to North Vermillion, and then fell to Tri-West 63-28 to finish 0-2 on the day. The Patriots will play Riverton Parke (2-7) at 4 p.m. on Friday for fifth place.

Girls' basketball

LEBANON TOURNAMENT: Bloomington North's rematch with Mooresville didn't go well either, with the Pioneers rolling to a 51-32 win to make the finals. North trailed 31-18 at halftime. Mia Robbennolt had 12 points. Cougars made just one 2-pointer, five 3s and went 15 of 22 at the line. Rachel Harshman 24 points for Pioneers. North bounced back with a 47-34 win over Perry Meridian (3-14) for third place. The Cougars led just 17-14 at halftime before easing away. Ava Reitmeyer had 15 points, Mia Robbennolt 11 and Ashley Stegmoller 10. Mia Robbennolt was named to All-Tournament team

EASTERN GREENE TOBY YOHO CLASSIC: 1A No. 6 Springs Valley handed Eastern Greene a 49-29 defeat to begin pool play. SV (13-1) led just 23-18 at half then went on a 14-4 run in the third. Mallorie Elliott had eight points for the T-Birds with five each for Keylee Hudson and Bianca Wyatt. Eastern then lost to Tecumseh, 67-47, which got off to a strong start and finished. SV beat Tecumseh 47-42 to win the pool. Owen Valley fell to Loogootee, which decided to play just one game in the tournament, 48-24. OV then suffered a 49-25 loss to Brownstown Central to finish pool play. New schedule for Friday has Bloomfield vs. Trinity Lutheran at 9:30 a.m. with the winner playing Eastern Greene at 2:45. Owen Valley will play Tecumseh at 11:15 a.m. with the loser playing for seventh at 4:30 and the winner going for fifth at 6:15.

Wednesday, Dec. 27

Boys' basketball

WABASH VALLEY CLASSIC: Edgewood advanced to the semifinals with a 67-55 win over Marshall, Ill. as Mialin White had a big game with 20 points and seven assists. Caden Jones added 12 points, Carl Norris nine and Owen McGovern and Kam Ranard had eight apiece. The Mustangs (5-5) advanced to Thursday's semifinal against Terre Haute North (6-3), which needed overtime to top South Vermillion, 57-47.

MONROVIA TOURNAMENT: Eastern Greene (2-6) split on the day, opening with a tough 53-49 loss to South Putnam before bouncing back to top Mooresville Christian, 64-38, for third place.

Girls' basketball

LEBANON TOURNAMENT: Senior Mia Robbennolt had 24 points, including the 1,000th of her career as Bloomington North rolled by Lowell, 59-33, in the quarterfinals. She had 15 in the first half to get the Cougars out to a 27-20 lead. North's defense gave up just 13 more points to pull away. Ava Reitmeyer added 13 points, 11 in the second half, and Ava Robbennolt had 10, hitting three 3s. It earned North (9-4) a rematch with Mooresville, a 50-37 winner over Greenfield-Central, in the semifinals on Thursday morning.

Tuesday, Dec. 26

Boys' basketball

WABASH VALLEY CLASSIC: Edgewood opened play with a 58-51 win over Shakamak with a big second-half rally after trailing by eight at halftime. Jacob Boggs had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs (4-5). Carl Norris had 16 points, Mialin White 12 and Carson Huttenlocker nine. TJ May had 17 points in the first half for the Lakers but just three more in the second half. Mustangs will play Marshall, Ill. a 48-44 upset winner over Casey-Westfield, Ill.
