Bloomington area high school roundup for Dec. 11-16

Saturday, Dec. 16

Wrestling

BO HENRY CLASSIC: Tell City (216) topped Owen Valley (192) for the team title while host Bloomington North was seventh (140½). The Patriots had a wrestler finish in the top six in every weight class, led by champions Branson Weaver (150 pounds) and Dylan Hale (285). Weaver posted an 18-3 tech fall in his final while Hale had a pin in 3:25. Taking second were Eli Collier (120) and Jenson Ackison (157) and third were Trayton Reuter (113) and Quaid Hinshaw (165). North had a first-place finisher in Cael Hickok, who beat Ackison for the 157 title, 9-6. The Cougars also saw Tre Hopkins (132), Miguel Tidrow (144) and Jeremiah Casillas (165) finish second and Kanye Roberts-Gray (120) take third. Darren Burns was fourth at 150. COLUMBUS EAST INVITATIONAL: Terre Haute South (249½) topped the host Olympians (243) for the team title while Edgewood took fourth (131). The Mustangs were led by 215-pound champion Trenton Fender, who won his semifinal 6-4 in SV-OT and then won his final in just 28 seconds. John Orman was second at 120, running into Monrovia's Isaac Ash again, and Michael Niedigh was second at 150, losing a tough final, 8-7. Taking fourth were Cayleb Sides (126), Peyton Arthur (132), Cayleb Stephens (157), Cameron Richardson (165) and Christian Fields (190). Complete results at trackwrestling.com.

JEFFERSONVILLE CLASSIC: Bloomington South finished second by the slimmest of margins despite forfeiting three spots and having a wrestler get injured in the semifinals. The Panthers had 236½ points to 237 for Oldham County, Ky. Fishers was third (229½). South had four champs as Jaxson Jean went 5-0 at 106 pounds with four pins, the last two going just 41 and 14 seconds; At 132, Amrin Pratt was 5-0 with four pins, the last three all in the first period; at 144, Wyatt Conley was 5-0 with three pins, the lat of 3:02 in the final; and at 165, No. 6 Evan Roudebush was 5-0 with three pins, beating No. 12 Xavier Smith of Fishers, 7-2 in the final. Carson Bohall was second at 150. Taking fourth were Wayne Harden at 144, having to default the third-place matchl after an injury, and Tristan Hicks at 175. Andrew Mathis lost his opener, then won three straight to fight back for seventh at 157. Mason Grubbs (190) and Oliver Piwozskin (215) were sixth. Complete results at trackwrestling.com.

Girls' basketball

LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN 58, MADISON CHRISTIAN 18: Lions (9-4) push win streak to seven with road victory. Ellie Mae Winders with 15 points, Victoria Mann 14 and Abagail Rousey with 10 for LCA, which led 35-12 at halftime.

Boys' basketball

FRANKLIN 66, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 53: Grizzly Cubs (7-1) won their sixth straight by jumping out to a 24-9 lead after the first quarter. North (1-5) got 16 points from Derrick Cross, 13 points and seven rebounds from Luke Lindeman, 12 points from Connor O'Guinn and nine assists from Evan Cheng. But the Cougars were just 3 of 22 on 3s.

FLOYD CENTRAL 64, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 58: It was a tight game until the host Highlanders (2-5) pulled away in the fourth after taking a slim 50-47 lead. The game was tied at 19 after one quarter and FC led 34-33. Floyd Central came in giving up 70 ppg.

EDGEWOOD 39, SULLIVAN 38: It was ugly for 26 minutes but beautiful for the last five as two missed free throws by the Arrows (5-2, 3-1) with 10 seconds left opened the door for Mialin White to find Carson Huttenlocker in the left corner for a game-winning 3-pointer with three seconds left. Edgewood (3-5, 1-2), which struggled mightily to score most of the night, had 15 of its 39 points in the final five minutes after trailing 34-24. Sullivan helped by going 2-of-8 at the line in the fourth. Carl Norris had nine points, Huttenlocker eight and Nolan Reynolds seven for the Mustangs. Caden Jones had eight rebounds and White seven rebounds and four assists despite foul trouble. Edgewood had lost five straight to the Arrows, dating back to an overtime win in January of 2020.

Friday, Dec. 15

Boys' basketball

INDIAN CREEK 62, EDGEWOOD 58: The Mustangs (2-5, 1-2) lost a tough WIC game on the road in a battle that was tight throughout. The Braves (5-1, 4-0) led 34-30 at half and just 45-44 after three and hit enough free throws late to pull it out. Mialin White had 10 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals for Edgewood while Kam Ranard had 17 points and 10 boards. Jacob Boggs added 10 points. The Braves hit eight 3s to four for Edgewood.

SOUTHPORT 67, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 57: Cougars (1-4, 0-1) drop CI opener on the road to Cards (2-4, 1-1). Connor O'Guinn had 26 points, hitting six 3s, while Luke Lindeman had 17 points and 12 rebounds for North.

BARR-REEVE 53, EASTERN GREENE 34: T-Birds (1-4) run into tough No. 8 team in 1A at home.

Girls' basketball

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 57, GREENWOOD 37: Panthers (6-5) headed north to face a potential sectional foe and the sounds of 58 whistles are still echoing in their ears. Greenwood was called for 33 fouls, resulting in four foul outs and South going 28-of-38 at the line, including 15 of 19 in the fourth. Two Panthers fouled out as part of the 25 fouls they piled up, but the Woodmen were just 14-of-26 on free throws. South led 14-7 and gradually pulled away, leading 40-27 after three. Julia Lashley had 18 points and Abbie Lucas 11.

INDIAN CREEK 78, EDGEWOOD 35: IU recruit Faith Wiseman was one of four Braves to reach double figures in a WIC rout. Wiseman had 15, Lauren Foster 18, Ayla Lollar 16 and Lexi Sichting 12 for 3A No. 4 IC (10-2, 4-0), which is averaging 67 ppg and winning by an average of 31. It was 23-12 after one before the Braves exploded for 30 in the second to go up 53-20. Macey Crider had 13 points and Madi Bland seven for the Mustangs (8-5, 5-2).

Thursday, Dec. 14

Girls' basketball

EASTERN GREENE 44, WHITE RIVER VALLEY 40: Keylee Hudson was quite ill going into the SWIAC game and probably didn't feel much better seeing the Wolverines jump out to an unexpected 20-9 lead in the first quarter. But Hudson and the T-Birds (7-3, 3-1) recovered in time, putting on a 19-5 run into halftime. They still trailed 37-36 going to the fourth and shut down WRV to pull it out. Hudson had 19 of her 21 points in the last three quarters. Mallorie Elliott added nine points.

Boys' swimming

EDGEWOOD 110, GREENCASTLE 64: Mustangs get wins in the 200 and 500 frees from Josh Kohne, while Tucker McCarty takes the IM and backstroke. Matthew Phillips wins the breast, Sam Kohne wins the fly and Myles Mundy is the top diver. Edgewood also sweeps all three relays.

Girls' swimming

EDGEWOOD 131, GREENCASTLE 39: Another strong outing for the Mustangs is led by Ellie Vagedes, who wins the 200 free and the fly, and Ellie Lewis, winner of the IM and breaststroke. Maya Gill wins the 100 free, Sophia Kapperman the 500 free and Avery Dunham takes diving. Edgewood also sweeps the relays.

Wednesday, Dec. 13

Wrestling

MONROVIA 42, EDGEWOOD 33: Mustangs forfeited four spots, giving up 24 points. Winners for Edgewood were 106: Katelyn Holmes, fft.; 132: Peyton Arthur, p. 3:54; 150: Michael Neidigh, p 2:22; 157: Cayleb Stephens, p 2:00; 190: Christian Fields, fft.; 225: Trenton Fender, d. 11-7. BLOOMINGTON NORTH 42, NORTHVIEW 33: Cougars win on the road.

FLOYD CENTRAL 39, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 33: Pin by Noah Banet, the sixth ranked wrestler in the Evansville Semistate at 157 pounds, gives Highlanders the team win. Carson Bohall's 20-7 major at 150 tied it up. South victories came from Jaxsen Jean at 106 (p. :55); Wayne Harden at 138 (p. 3:36); Wyatt Cooksey at 144 (20-5 tech fall); Evan Roudebush at 165 (p. 1:00) and Oliver Piwoszkin at 215 (p. 3:05).
