Innovative High School Coach Defies Convention Again

The coach who never punts is at it again.

Kevin Kelley, head coach of Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas is known as a football innovator, but what he’s doing this year is especially groundbreaking.

When he found out that college teams who have more 20-plus yard plays than their opponents win 81 percent of the time, he decided to incorporate rugby into his team’s playbook.

Much like the hook and ladder play, Kelley will have his receivers run alongside each other in preparation for a lateral rather than having them look for downfield blocks.

Kelley has gained widespread recognition for never punting and almost always onside kicking. In fact, his team has punted only four times in four seasons. Most coaches would call this a gimmick, but statistically, he’s almost always making the right call.

What’s surely no gimmick is Kelley’s 77-17 record as Pulaski’s head coach.
