NY Islanders quickly sell out of melted Nassau Coliseum ice

In the grand tradition of sports teams knowing parts of their fanbase will buy anything, the New York Islanders, who said goodbye to Nassau Coliseum last month, have sold out of melted ice from their home of 43 years.

NHL teams have this done before, most notably the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks, who sold vials of melted ice from respective rinks with proceeds benefiting charity. The Islanders gave fans the opportunity to do the same, offering 1/2 ounce vials for $20 (plus shipping and handling), which includes a certificate of authenticity and matching numbered hologram, ensuring buyers it’s the real deal from the April 25th Coliseum finale against the Washington Capitals.

Next season the Islanders will begin playing at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

How popular was this offering by the Islanders? The team sold out of the vials quickly, so if you wanted a piece of the Coliseum before its renovated, well, hopefully you’re the one who grabbed that seat.
