Letter besmirching Jimmer inspires hilarious Facebook thread
If living in the epicenter of Jimmer mania is growing tiresome for any basketball-indifferent BYU students, they might be wise to keep it to themselves.
That's the lesson driven home by the story of Michelle Peralta, a BYU student fed up with the tribute songs, homemade T-shirts and "What Would Jimmer Do?" signs that have popped up in honor of the BYU star. Peralta has received a torrent of Facebook messages after writing a scathing letter to the school's newspaper on Monday criticizing the widespread "Jimmer worship":
I can't walk across campus without hearing Jimmer Fredette's name a dozen times. His name comes up everywhere: in class, at work, during lunch ... really, people? Cut it out with the Jimmer worship. Last time I checked, idol worship was very much frowned upon in the scriptures.
Don't you have a life to live? Then quit wasting it in front of the TV or in lines at the Marriott Center.
At the very least, stop trying to convert those of us who don't follow BYU sports and don't care that baseball and badminton are two different things. Pushing basketball on us isn't going to make us like it any better.
The letter probably would have gone unnoticed had it not been posted on the forums of several BYU fan sites. Instead, Peralta received about 600 pro-Jimmer Facebook messages from fellow BYU students and alums, a few angry but most pithy and hilarious.

The staggering number of responses to Peralta's letter in such a short time is just the latest example of Fredette's impact at BYU.
Writing the letter to the editor may have been therapeutic at the time for Peralta, but in this case she might have been better off staying quiet.
