Dana White: Jon Jones wants to fight Daniel Cormier

UFC President Dana White Apologizes for Judging Protocol Breach: ‘I Overstepped My Bounds'

As we wrote earlier today, it has seemed like UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones might need some extra convincing to either, sign a contract extension with the UFC and/or sign on to rematch Alexander Gustafsson. Well, according to UFC president Dana White, the former is not true but the latter most certainly is.

“Just to clear up a couple things, people think we're in contract negotiations with Jon Jones – we're not. Jon Jones still has five fights left on his contract,” White said in a statement released Monday.

“So what we're doing right now is trying to get him to sign the bout agreement for Gustafsson. He doesn't want to fight Gustafsson...[UFC CEO] Lorenzo Fertitta and I have a meeting with Jones on Thursday to get him to sign the bout agreement, and he's asking to fight Cormier instead.”

Well, that's a bit of a curveball. It appears as though all of Daniel Cormier's trash talk over the years may have gotten to Jon Jones as the champ now wants to let DC take a crack at him.

The UFC, MMA fans and Alexander Gustafsson have all assumed that a rematch would immediately follow their epic title defense last September but "Bones" has had other plans. He next defended his belt against Glover Teixeira and Gustafsson was made to fight Jimi Manuwa.

Both men won their respective bouts and the UFC announced plans to book Jones vs. Gustafsson II for August. Once Jones did not immediately jump at the chance to rematch his toughest opponent to date, UFC president Dana White threatened that the fight could take place in Gus' home of Sweden if Jones made the promotion wait until after August.

However, Jones and his management haven't balked. Gustafsson is also sticking by his earlier stance.

"Just sign that bout agreement [Jones]," the Swede said in an earlier released statement.

"Let’s go.”
