Bishop Moore, Montverde, Orangewood advance to FHSAA state soccer tournaments

Winston Weibel and Marco Acevedo scored goals for Bishop Moore in a Florida High School Athletic Association boys soccer regional championship game Wednesday night.

But it was a huge save by senior goalkeeper Gabe Esposito on the first penalty kick attempt by visiting Satellite (12-2-6) that helped the Hornets qualify for the Class 4A state tournament for the third consecutive season.

Bishop Moore prevailed 4-3 on PKs after finishing regulation and overtime in a 2-2 tie.

The FHSAA state tournament for teams in 4A, 3A and 2A take place Tuesday-Saturday at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale. Admission is $11 in advance and $14 on day of game through the GoFan website.

Orangewood Christian boys won 3-2 vs. Circle Christian (9-6-1) in 2A to advance to the state semis for the first time since 2019.

Bishop Moore’s back-to-back defending 4A state champion girls rolled to a 4-1 win vs. Satellite (18-5-1). Maddie Preusser scored two goals while twin sisters Amelia Miller and Raelin Miller each scored once.

Montverde Academy girls secured a one-goal victory for the third time in four matches, winning 4-3 vs. Tampa Berkeley Prep (16-5-0). Senior Estefania Gonzalez finished with one goal and one assist for the defending 3A champs.

Tuesday

Class 2A boys

No. 2 North Miami Beach Scheck Hillel (12-3-1) vs. No. 3 Orangewood Christian (15-3-1), 4

No. 1 Tampa Carrollwood Day (16-2-1) vs. No. 4 St. Augustine St. Joseph (9-8-1), 7

State final: Friday, 7

Buzz: Orangewood won the 1A championship in 2015 and finished runners-up to Scheck Hillel on PKs in 2016. The Rams are in the state semifinals for the ninth time since 2007. Scheck Hillel reached the semifinals in 2022 and region finals in 2023.

Wednesday

Class 3A girls

No. 2 Merritt Island Edgewood (13-2-2) vs. No. 3 Fort Lauderdale NSU (15-3-0), 10 a.m.

No. 1 Montverde (16-4-1) vs. No. 4 Gainesville P.K. Yonge (16-3-3), 1

State final: Saturday, 10 a.m.

Buzz: Defending champion Montverde defeated NSU 6-0 in last year’s championship game. The Eagles last faced P.K. Yonge in 2017, when they won 10-0 in a regional quarterfinal. Montverde has outscored opponents 89-27.

Thursday

Class 4A girls

No. 2 Bishop Moore (13-6-2) vs. No. 3 Delray Beach American Heritage (10-1-3), 10 a.m.

No. 1 South Walton (16-1-0) vs. No. 4 Tampa Academy of the Holy Names (12-4-1), 1

State final: Saturday, 4

Buzz: Bishop Moore defeated American Heritage in state championships games each of the past two years. The Hornets won 1-0 last season and 4-2 in 2022. South Walton and Academy of the Holy Names were shut out in state semifinal matches two years ago.

Class 4A boys

No. 2 Bishop Moore (23-2-0) vs. No. 3 Lakeland McKeel Academy (19-3-0), 4

No. 1 Miami Gulliver Prep (23-0-1) vs. No. 4 South Walton (9-12-2), 7

State final: Saturday, 7

Buzz: Bishop Moore finished state runners-up in 2022 and ’23. Gulliver Prep edged the Hornets 3-2 in last year’s championship game. Bishop Moore opens the state tournament with a semifinal rematch vs. McKeel Academy, whom they beat 2-0.
