Bills’ Sean McDermott breaks down final drive vs. Patriots but remains confident
The Buffalo Bills are doing their best to keep their heads held high after being upset by the New England Patriots in Week 7.
Head coach Sean McDermott says there’s still plenty of confidence to be found in the Bills (4-3) locker room… even after such a miserable loss.
“Yes, it is,” said McDermott when asked if confidence remains high. “I’m confident in our players and coaches.”
Throughout the 29-25 loss, McDermott’s defense had plenty of struggles. But it all came to a head when the Patriots marched down the field with less than two minutes left and scored the game-winning touchdown.
That drive, like others, involved mistakes by the Bills.
“Just overall, just got to close the game out. When it comes down to it, got to close the game out. Just overall better tackling, fundamentally we’ve got to do a better job there and that starts with me,” McDermott said.
With 12 seconds remaining, the game was sealed when New England quarterback Mac Jones found tight end Mike Gesicki on the end zone for the go-ahead score.
Ironically, it was Taron Johnson in coverage. Just one week earlier, the defensive back was in the same position against the New York Giants in the final moment but he batted away a final pass. That didn’t happen this time.
“A good throw and catch–Caught the ball,” Johnson said in the locker room. “I feel like we didn’t do a good job tackling. There was some missed tackles that we had.”
“Missed tackles and execution,” Johnson added.
Thankfully, or perhaps depending on how the game unfolds, the Bills will be right back at it against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday. The short week will help Buffalo forget about the lackluster final drive for the Bills, but there’s still a few days to keep thinking on it.
