Big Ten bowl game tracker, all-time bowl records, and updated bowl results

The Big Ten is prepping for one last go at the bowl season before the entire landscape of the college football world transforms in 2024. And the Big Ten will have one last chance to see one of its own crowned as a national champion. Michigan received the no. 1 ranking in the College Football Playoff and was rewarded with a trip to the Rose Bowl to face SEC champion Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal. Of course, the Big Ten will be well-represented throughout the bowl season this year in addition to the Wolverines (and future Big Ten member Washington) getting a national championship opportunity.

Five of the Big Ten’s 14 members will not be participating in a postseason bowl game this year. They are listed below and include Nebraska, who saw its once unthinkable bowl drought extended for a seventh straight season. Other teams not going to a bowl game include Indiana and Michigan State, who have just undergone a coaching change with higher hopes for success in 2024. It also includes Illinois and Purdue, two teams who did go to a bowl game last season.

While Minnesota only won five games this season, the Gophers have been given an NCAA exemption to play in a bowl game that is unable to fill its spot due to a lack of bowl-eligible teams around the country. Minnesota joins James Madison and Jacksonville State in receiving a pass from the NCAA to play in the bowl season, although James Madison and Jacksonville State needed the exemption due to being in a transition phase from the FCS to the FBS.

Below is a look at each Big Ten team that will be playing in the bowl season, each school’s 2023 regular season record, and each school’s all-time bowl record.

Michigan Wolverines (No. 1 in College Football Playoff)

Season record: 13-0 (Big Ten champions)

College Football Playoff: Rose Bowl vs. no. 4 Alabama (12-1, SEC champion) on Jan. 1, 2024

All-time bowl record: 21-29

The Wolverines will be making their third consecutive trip to the College Football Playoff. That has been the mission all along and the team has put a chip on their shoulders every step of the way. Michigan ascended to the top spot in the final College Football Playoff rankings after Georgia lost in the SEC championship. That locked in a trip to the Rose Bowl for a College Football Playoff semifinal, where the Wolverines will face SEC champion Alabama. Alabama as a program is well-versed in the College Football Playoff, but Michigan is 0-2 in its last two trips the past two seasons.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Season record: 11-1

Cotton Bowl: vs. no. 9 Missouri (10-2) on Dec. 29

All-time bowl record: 26-28

With Ohio State being locked out of the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes are still going to a New Years Six bowl game. The Buckeyes will be taking on the Missouri Tigers, who finished second int he SEC East behind Georgia behind a big year on offense.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Season record: 10-2

Peach Bowl: vs. no. 11 Ole Miss (10-2) on Dec. 30

All-time bowl record: 31-19-2

Penn State will be playing in the Peach Bowl for the first time in program history, and they will also be facing a new opponent. Penn State has never faced Ole Miss in football before. The Rebels had a 10-2 season and finished the year second in the SEC West behind SEC champion Alabama.

Iowa Hawkeyes

Season record: 10-3 (Big Ten West champions)

Citrus Bowl: vs. Tennessee (8-4) on Jan. 1, 2024

All-time bowl record: 18-16-1

Just about every bowl projection you check seems to have Iowa heading to the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1. The Citrus Bowl makes the most sense with the Michigan in the College Football Playoff and Ohio State a virtual lock for a New Years Six game. And Penn State is a team most expect will be playing in a New Years Six game as well. That leaves Iowa, then only other ranked Big Ten team, the most likely candidate to fill the Big Ten’s spot in the Citrus Bowl.

Northwestern Wildcats

Season record: 7-5

Las Vegas Bowl: vs. Utah (8-4) on Dec. 23

All-time bowl record: 6-10

Northwestern is one of the biggest surprises this season in the Big Ten and will be ending the season in a bowl game, and already with a winning record in hand. The Wildcats are going to play in the Las Vegas Bowl against the Utah Utes of the Pac-12 (and soon heading to the Big 12).

Wisconsin Badgers

Season record: 7-5

ReliaQuest Bowl: vs. LSU (9-3) on Jan. 1, 2024

All-time bowl record: 19-15

This may not have been the season Wisconsin had in mind, but the Badgers are still going to get to end the season on Jan. 1 in a Big Ten vs. SEC bowl matchup. The Badgers will have their hands full against an explosive LSU offense led by Jayden Daniels at quarterback.

Maryland Terrapins

Season record: 6-6

Pinstripe Bowl: vs. Miami (7-5) on Dec. 28

All-time bowl record: 6-4

Rutgers is going bowling, and they will not have to travel very far to get there. Rutgers will play in the Pinstripe Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes in Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. This is the third time Rutgers will play in the Pinstripe Bowl, and they are 1-1 all-time in the bowl game. This is Rutgers’ first time in the Pinstripe Bowl since joining the Big Ten.

Minnesota Golden Gophers

Nick Wosika-USA TODAY Sports

Season record: 5-7 (NCAA exemption to fill bowl vacancy)

QuickLane Bowl: vs. Bowling Green (7-5) on Dec. 26

All-time bowl record: 11-12

With Minnesota being among the last teams to be ruled eligible to play in a  bowl game despite having just 5 wins to help fill empty spots in the bowl lineup, the Gophers were just waiting to see what spot needed to be filled. As expected, that vacancy was found in the QuickLane Bowl against Bowling Green in Detroit.
