Big Stone City and Sisseton trade victories in an American Legion Baseball doubleheader

CASTLEWOOD — The Castlewood Ravens survived a late rally by the Castlewood Monarchs to notch a 7-5 win in Eastern Dakota League amateur baseball on Monday.

The Ravens (8-2 overall and in the EDL) led 5-1 after seven innings and took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Monarchs (4-8 and 4-8) plated three runs and had the bases loaded when Ravens reliever Kellan Benck recorded the final out on a strikeout.

Benck and Gus Steiger each homered for the Ravens. Sam Stroup had three hits, including a double, and Steiger, Nick Geffre and Ben Althoff each two. Althoff and Braedon Zaug contributed doubles.

Tucker Wookey fanned 11 batters in six innings get the win. Jacob Tisher pitched two innings of relief and Benck recorded the save in the ninth.

Jacob Tvedt produced three hits and also went the distance on the mound for the Monarchs. Brady Steffen drove in three runs with two hits.

Legion Baseball

Big Stone City 9-5, Sisseton 1-8

Big Stone City and Sisseton split an American Legion Baseball doubleheader on Monday.

Josh Mueller fanned 11 batters and allowed only one hit over five innings to lead Big Stone in the opener. Dru Boots pitched the final two innings.

Hunter Merritt notched two hits, Braxton Brandriet tripled and Carter Lee doubled for Big Stone.

Landyn Steichen and Boe Iverson each singled for Sisseton. Konnor Sieber took the loss.

Sisseton bounced back to win the second game behind Carter Stickland, who doubled and singled and also tossed a five-hitter with six strikeouts. Julius Cloud drove in three runs with a double and a triple.

Merritt clubbed a double for Big Stone, which visits Wheaton (Minn.) on Thursday.
