Big Sticks bust Hastings, 11-4, at Astoria Field

Jul. 8—DICKINSON — In a Friday-night game that clearly delighted the Dickinson fans, the Badlands Big Sticks upended the Hastings (Neb.) Sodbusters, 11-4, at Dakota Community Bank and Trust Ballpark in a solid restart after their mini-break over Independence Day week. The 'Sticks hadn't taken the field since Sunday, July 2, but the brief layoff had zero impact on the team's production, regardless.

The Big Sticks busted loose on offense and defense, with starting righthander Michael Getzinger scattering 5 hits while striking out 3 and taking the win in six innings of work and Dickinson State University standout Balas Buckmaster shaking the dust off with a fantastic day at the plate. Buckmaster went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and a pair of runs to go along with 2 stolen bases while starting at second-base.

While the 11-run output was clearly the sign of a juggernaut-level night, it was a pair of thrilling plays from both teams early-on that brought the Astoria Field crowd to its feet.

Down 1-0 in the first inning after a Hastings homer from Kale Jensen, the Big Sticks bounced back with a one-out single in the bottom of the inning from centerfielder Matthew Lewis, a single from catcher Isaac Huettl and a walk to Danny Rogers that loaded the bases. Right-fielder Cam Yuran popped into an infield fly, but designated-hitter Royce Vandine drilled a 2-run single to center to give the 'Sticks a 2-1 advantage at the end of the second.

The Sodbusters scored 2 runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead in the see-saw offensive battle, but the Big Sticks knotted the game at 3-3 on an RBI double from Lewis that plated Abulhosn, who had reached on a double. Then with Lewis in scoring position at second, Sodbuster centerfielder Layne Shiers snagged a ball from over the wall in center off the bat of Huettl to end the threat and the inning.

Not to be outdone, after Hastings infielder Markos Cabranes reached on an error and sat at first with only one out, Hastings first-baseman Landon Gaz blasted a ball to right-centerfield that was snared on a brilliant play by Yuran and he almost doubled Cabranes off at first-base. The play inspired the home team and it was all Big Sticks from there.

Buckmaster doubled home Rogers and Yuran in the bottom of the third, and Quade Peters hit a ground ball that sent Buckmaster across the plate on an error for a 6-3 lead and sent Abulhosn — who was hit by a pitch — to third. A single from Lewis drove Abulhosn home and the Big Sticks were off-and-running with a 7-3 lead at the end of three.

The Big Sticks, who outhit Hastings 11-5 on the night, then added a run in the sixth after the Sodbusters closed the deficit to 7-4. Rogers was hit by a pitch and doubled home by Yuran, then the 'Sticks added 3 more in the bottom of the eighth on a 2-run double from Buckmaster that scored Rogers and Yuran and Buckmaster then scored on an RBI ground-out from third-baseman Alex Urlaub to make the final score 11-4 and close out the game.

Lewis ended up going 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI and a run with a steal, while Yuran scored twice on 2-for-4 hitting with an RBI and 3 total bases.

The Big Sticks (22-12) sit at second in the Independence League behind the 20-3 Nebraska Prospects, and will be hosting the Sodbusters the next two days as part of their homestand that runs through next Sunday, July 16. The Casper (Wyo.) Spuds will be in town from July 10-12 and the Sawtooth (Idaho) Sockeyes will be at Astoria Field after that, both for three-game sets.
