Big Papi teams up with North High champs at WooSox opener
WORCESTER - Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz and members of the North High School state champion basketball team shared the honor of throwing out the first pitch - make that, first pitches - before the season-opening game of the Worcester Red Sox.
Fans at chilly Polar Park Friday afternoon gave the honorees a round of applause.
Another local legend, Bob Cousy, helped get things started with an enthusiastic delivery of "Play Ball." And Worcester singer Cara Brindisi, who competed on "The Voice" television show, delivered the national anthem.
The pregame festivities kicked off the Triple-A team's third season in Worcester.
"Opening Day, a beautiful day to play baseball," Big Papi said to the crowd in his remarks.
With the ceremony over, the WooSox squared off against the Syracuse Mets.
