Big meet for Bolin: Thrower improves on No. 1 ranking; Crestview 4-peats in Firelands

OLIVESBURG – Wade Bolin and Crestview’s stable of relay runners made for an unbeatable combination this week.

Bolin cemented his status as the top discus thrower in Division III, topping his previous best – and the state’s best – by seven feet in the two-day Firelands Conference meet that concluded Friday at Crestview.

Bolin flung the disc 187 feet, 4 inches to improve his No. 1 ranking in Ohio and help the Cougars win a fourth straight Firelands crown. Bolin is now less than a foot away from breaking the school mark of 188-1.5 set by John Casler in 1967.

Bolin broke Casler’s shot put record, also set 57 years ago, a couple of weeks ago at the Mapleton Invitational with a toss of 55-10. The old mark was 55-2.25.

On Friday night, Bolin bettered his record by nearly five feet with a toss of 60-3.5, giving him the only 60-footer in DIII.

Almost as impressive as Bolin was the way Crestview dominated the relays. The boys won all four – the 4x800 (8:17.01), the 4x200 (1:35.34), the 4 x 100 (45.70) and the 4x400 (3:32.20), in that order.

Crestview’s other firsts came from Logan Friges in the 400 (52.32), Cooper Brockway in the 800 (2:09.78) and Liam Kuhn in the pole vault (14-0).

Plymouth’s Riley Ramey was among the conference champs, winning the 200 (22.51).

Crestview finished with 139 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Mapleton (94) and Plymouth (86). On the women’s side, the only Richland County champ was Crestview’s 4x200 team (1:50.93).

South Central finished first in the team standings, out-distancing runner-up Crestview by a 151-109 margin.
