Best of the Week! The Top 10 performers in soccer, field hockey, cross country

Last week featured a major upset in girls soccer, a new Suburban One League golf champion, and players whose leadership and poise put their teams in position to win. Check out the top performances from the week of Oct. 2 in soccer, field hockey, cross country and golf, and be sure to vote in the latest Boys Athlete of the Week Poll, and Girls Athlete of the Week Poll beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Top 10 Performances in Girls Soccer

Regan Kelso, Archbishop Wood: She scored a hat trick and assisted on two more in the Vikings’ 7-1 win over Conwell-Egan, and netted one goal in a 3-2 victory over St. Hubert’s.

Riley Morris, Gwynedd Mercy: Tuesday was a memorable day for Morris — in more ways than one. The senior had one goal and one assist to lead the Monarchs to a 3-1 win over Villa Joseph Marie. It was Gwynedd Mercy’s first victory over AACA rival and perennial state championship contender VJM in eight seasons. It was also the 20th goal of Morris’ impressive career.

Paige Eckert, Archbishop Wood: The sophomore scored the game-winning goal with under a minute to go, giving the Vikings’ an important 3-2 victory over St. Hubert’s in a Catholic League matchup. The Vikings are in position to secure a first-round bye in the PCL playoffs, which begin Oct. 19.

Lynley Koschineg, Gwynedd Mercy: The Monarchs’ senior goalie recorded four saves against the team's biggest rival, Villa Joseph Marie. Koschineg allowed a lone goal against the Jems, securing Gwynedd Mercy’s first win over VJM in eight seasons.

Rhyan Haws, Pennsbury: Haws, one of the few seniors on a young Falcons’ squad, delivered an exceptional performance on the defensive line against CR South. Haws intercepted numerous pass attempts, assisted the offense and helped secure a shutout. Though the game ended in a 0-0 tie, it was a nice confidence boost for the Falcons, who had allowed five goals in their previous game.

Abby Collins, Neshaminy: The junior tallied two goals, the second being the game-winner in overtime, to give Neshaminy a huge 2-1 victory over CB West. It was just the second loss of the season for the Bucks. Collins repeated her efforts against ultra-rival Pennsbury, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win.

Mia Cairone, Council Rock North: The junior had a huge game against formidable neighbor Villa Joseph Marie, with the Penn State commit scoring four of North's goals in a 5-2 victory.

Liv Grenda, Pennridge: After suffering a broken nose in a game last Friday, the senior midfielder was back on the pitch, missing just one game, and showing no ill-effects as she scored three goals in the Rams’ 6-0 win over Bensalem.

Faith Greenday, Quakertown: The sophomore was the difference-maker in the Panthers’ 3-1 win over New Hope-Solebury. The midfielder was the ultimate playmaker, flying up and down the field all game, controlling the pace of play and negotiating numerous passes to her teammates. Greenday also contributed a goal in the Panthers’ victory over Upper Dublin.

Kelly Donnelly, Central Bucks South: Donnelly had quite the week: she scored three goals in the Titans’ 6-0 win against Souderton, and netted a pair of goals in a 4-3 overtime victory against Pennsbury.

Top 10 Performances in Field Hockey

Brynn Bogle, Council Rock North: Bogle scored two goals, including the game-winner in the final minute of the game, to give CR North a thrilling victory over rival CR South. The win ended a five-game losing streak for CR North. She had a goal and an assist in North's next game, a 4-1 victory over Bensalem.

Laurel Tonkinson, Archbishop Wood: The Vikings’ goalie earned a shutout against Conwell-Egan, her third clean sheet against a PCL opponent this season. The 2-0 win advanced the Vikings in the PCL standings as they head toward the playoffs.

Melissa Sessler, North Penn: The Knights’ center back was a key factor in a 4-2 win over high-scoring Wissahickon. Sessler shut down the Trojans’ attackers and also made several fine passes out of the backfield.

Grace McGeehan, North Penn: The senior helped the Knights to three wins last week, scoring three goals and assisting on three more in victories over Truman, Pennridge and Wissahickon.

Ava Cozza, New Hope-Solebury: Cozza gave the Lions plenty of offense in back-to-back wins. On Wednesday, she assisted on four goals and scored one of her own against Upper Moreland, and in Thursday’s win over Cheltenham, she collected three goals and one assist.

Ash Conrad, Upper Moreland: The goalie recorded nine saves against rival Lower Moreland, and held the Lions scoreless through regulation and overtime in a 1-0 OT win. Several of his saves occurred in the first quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Ava Bailey, Upper Moreland: Bailey scored the game-winner in overtime, knocking in the ball off a penalty corner to give the Golden Bears an exciting 1-0 win against Lower Moreland.

Julia Blair, Souderton: Blair scored the lone goal of the game in Souderton’s 1-0 win over CB South. It was the seventh straight victory for Souderton, and Blair’s 11th goal in her last six games. She also had two assists in a 4-0 win over CR South.

Skylar Beal, Abington: Beal delivered three goals and two assists to lead the Ghosts to a 6-1 win over William Tennent. She did most of her damage during the second quarter, with two goals and two assists in a five-minute burst.

Sophia Cipressi, Pennridge: The sophomore scored her first varsity goal on Tuesday, and finished the game with her second and third career goals. Cipressi’s hat trick helped the Rams secure a 7-0 win against Bensalem.

Eden Schrag, Dock Mennonite: Schrag scored the game-winning goal in overtime to the Pioneers a 1-0 win over Plumstead Christian. On Senior Night, the senior posted a hat trick in a win against Pottstown.

Kendra Pitts, CB West: The Bucks’ goalie was sensational in front of the cage in a fast-paced game against Neshaminy. Pitts made five saves, allowing just one first-quarter goal against Neshaminy, who outshot the Bucks. She also led the Bucks’ defense on the back line and penalty corners.

Top 10 Performances in Boys Soccer

Anthony Pumilia, Hatboro-Horsham: Pumilia tallied two goals in the second half, breaking a scoreless tie to lead the Hatters to a 2-0 win against Springfield.

Emerson Kiss, Archbishop Wood: It was quite the week for the junior, who scored both of the Vikings’ goals in 2-1 win over Neshaminy on Monday. He followed that with a two-goal game in the Vikings’ 6-1 victory over Cardinal O’Hara in a Catholic League match. He closed out the week with a goal and an assist in a triumph against Devon Prep. The Vikings improved to 6-2 in the competitive Catholic League.

Dylan Kopenits, Conwell-Egan: Kopenits scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Roman Catholic. The 1-0 victory gave the Eagles a 5-3 record in the Catholic League and bumped them up to fifth in the standings with three league games to go.

Dmitri Ilovski, North Penn: Ilovski scored on a penalty kick and had an assist as the Knights scored three times in the second half for a 3-2 comeback win against La Salle, one of the top teams in the Catholic league.

Evan Soriano, Pennsbury: Soriano scored two goals against the Falcons’ biggest rival Neshaminy in a 3-0 Patriot Division win.

Victor Colom, Dock Mennonite: Colom scored three goals to lead the Pioneers to a 5-1 win over Church Farm School. The senior also dished out an assist in the win.

Andrew Walloff, CB East: The senior defender helped CB East secure a 2-0 win against rival CB West, the seventh straight shutout for the Patriots. Walloff had a busy and effective game breaking up attacks and cleaning up everything in the midfield.

Zayd Najimi, Council Rock North: Najimi scored three goals and assisted on another, all in the first half, in CR North’s win over Truman.

Joey Dowd, CB West: Dowd registered two goals in the second half to give the Bucks the edge in a 3-1 win over Neshaminy.

Top 7 Cross Country Performances

Brady Ott, Council Rock North: The senior won the boys varsity race at the William Tennent Invitational, posting a time of 15:37.4 in the 5,000-meter run.

Riley Rooney, CB South: The junior took third place in the girls 5,000-meter varsity race at the William Tennent Invitational, posting an elite 18:28.8 time.

Gwen Hamilton, Archbishop Wood: The sophomore is a perfect 3-for-3 in Catholic League meets this season. Hamilton won the girls 5,000-meter race at the PCL’s third meet of the season with a time of 20:42.2.

Andreas Quattrocchi, Bristol: The junior took second place in the varsity boys 5k at the Bicentennial League meet with a time of 17:44.

Aidan Maue, Souderton: Maue took second place at the Souderton Twilight Invitational boys varsity 5,000-meter with a time of 15:46.7.

Matthew Gorman, Conwell-Egan: The senior won the boys 5k at the PCL Meet with a time of 17:15.73 at the hilly Belmont Plateau, and three days later, finished third in the Souderton Twilight Invitational, crossing the finish line in 15:52.

Shana Kearney, Bensalem: The senior finished second in the varsity girls race the Souderton Twilight Invitational with a time of 18:26.8.

Top Performance in Golf

Brady Gallagher, Quakertown: The senior shot a 1-over-par 72 to earn a first-place finish in the Suburban One League Boys Golf Championship at Five Ponds Golf Club. Gallagher shared top honors with Springfield’s Adam Fluehr and advanced to the District One Championship. Gallagher is the first Quakertown golfer to win the SOL championship in school history.
