The New Orleans Saints are playing for nothing but pride at this point. They’re 0-3 and simply not going to make the playoffs. Ahead of their matchup on Sunday against San Diego, I got to sit down with Brandon Scott, the managing editor at Cover32.

Check out my questions and his answers below.

1. The Chargers defense has disappointed so far. Why is this the case with so much talent in the secondary?

Brandon: Following the second half collapse in Kansas City to start the season, the Chargers rebounded nicely against Jacksonville at home. However, the defense again struggled against the Colts and faces another tough offense on Sunday. A defensive unit in need of stability faces even more change now with the injury to Manti Te’o and, hopefully, addition of Joey Bosa soon. The secondary has struggled tackling, but the unit as a whole just needs some more time to develop.

2. Melvin Gordon has shown plenty of promise. What’s changed from last year?

Brandon: Gordon is adjusting to life in the NFL. Few rookies immediately have an impact at the running back position during their rookie campaigns and Gordon is another example. Last season, Gordon displayed flashes of greatness, but struggled statistically overall. In year two he appears more prepared, confident, and ready to continue being an impact player for the Chargers.

3. How is this offense impacted by missing Keenan Allen?

Brandon: Now missing both Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead, the offense continues to search for an identity. Fortunately, the Chargers have a veteran quarterback who is poised and will make the necessary adjustments in order to continue being successful. Backups are going to need to make plays when called upon, but the overall offensive scheme should not be changed. Gordon will be asked to establish the run as Rivers looks to multiple receivers in passing sets.

4. Key matchup?

Brandon: The key matchup for Sunday will be the New Orleans receivers against the Chargers secondary. A unit that has yielded a lot of yardage will be tasked with facing Drew Brees and his stable of wide receivers. Injuries may have slowed the Saints, but in order to win the Chargers will need to play solid defense while continuing to force turnovers.

5. Score prediction?

Brandon: San Diego Chargers- 34, New Orleans Saints- 27
