Justin Fields injury updates: Bears QB doubtful after dislocating thumb

A dislocated right thumb Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields suffered during his team's 19-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday will likely keep him out another week.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that Fields, who underwent MRI imaging Monday, "looks to be doubtful" for Chicago's Week 7 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

"There's no timetable right now," Eberflus said. "It's really going to come down to grip strength and the natural swelling that comes along with this injury, so we should know more at the end of the week.

"I know he's a fast healer, so we'll see where he is."

Facing a third-and-7 near midfield early in the third quarter, Fields was sacked by Vikings pass rusher Danielle Hunter. The third-year quarterback tried to throw the ball away as he went to the ground, but his knee hit the ground prior to the release. Fields landed awkwardly on his right arm and was favoring his hand while walking to the Bears' locker room. He was ruled out for the remainder of the contest. X-rays were negative.

Tyson Bagent, an undrafted rookie from Division II Shepherd University, relieved Fields. On the third play of his first series, Bagent was sacked and fumbled. Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks scooped and scored to make it 19-6 in the third.

Bagent scored his first NFL touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter. He finished with 83 yards and an interception on 10-of-14 passing.

Eberflus said after the game Fields wanted to come back into the game but couldn't grip the ball.

Fields was coming off consecutive games with four passing touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 125 or more. He completed six of 10 passes for 58 yards and an interception Sunday before exiting.

Who is Tyson Bagent?

For the first two weeks of the season, the Bears had Nathan Peterman on the roster to back up Fields. But they released him on Sept. 20. That elevated Bagent, an undrafted free agent, into the No. 2 role.

At Shepherd, located in his native West Virginia, Bagent, 23, set the NCAA record with 159 touchdown passes over four seasons.

In three preseason games, Bagent was 20-for-29 as the third-stringer behind Fields, Peterman and, at times, P.J. Walker – who started Sunday for the Cleveland Browns.

Bagent’s father, Travis, was a 17-time world-champion arm wrestler.
