Bayside South squads grab regional championship victories, advance to state quarterfinals

Regional championships for soccer and field hockey have been decided in the Bayside Conference this week, as some teams advance to the MPSSAA State Quarterfinals, while others have had their seasons come to an end.

The Stephen Decatur field hockey team grabbed their first regional title in program history, while Pocomoke won their third straight in their pursuit of three straight state championships. In boys soccer, Crisfield grabbed a road playoff win to continue their season and advance to the state quarterfinals. And in girls soccer, Mardela continued a historic season of their own with a regional final win.

Here are how things went in the Bayside South's Soccer and Field Hockey Regional Championships on Tuesday:

Field Hockey

The Stephen Decatur Field Hockey team won the first regional championship in program history with their 1-0 overtime win over Parkside on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Tuesday afternoon's Class 2A East Regional Championship game between Parkside and Stephen Decatur was a tight one throughout, and the game went into overtime with both teams deadlocked at 0-0. But Stephen Decatur came through in OT with the win, courtesy of a game-winning goal by Avari Shoff.

Their regional title continues a historic season for the Seahawks, as the field hockey team had their first winning season since 1999 this year. Now, they'll be able to add their first regional championship to the trophy case at Decatur.

"It's funny because I told them that even if we lost today, we made history," Decatur head coach Katie Griffin said after the win. "What I preached to them the whole week was don't settle. Don't settle on what we've done. We have the talent to do more, so much more, and it's just great that they brought into it, believed it and believed in themselves and each other."

The Seahawks weren't the only Worcester County Field Hockey squad to grab a regional title yesterday, as the Pocomoke Warriors grabbed their third straight in Class 1A with a win over Washington.

Much like the Decatur-Parkside game, the Pocomoke-Washington matchup was tied at 0-0 for much of the night, with both teams putting together solid defensive efforts to keep the other out of goal. But back to back goals in the fourth quarter from Natalie Norfolk gave Pocomoke the lead, and Skylar Freistat wrapped things up with another goal late to give the Warriors the 3-0 victory.

Both teams will move on to the state quarterfinals later this week, with Pocomoke looking for their third straight Class 1A State Championship and Decatur looking to continue their already historic season in Class 2A.

Three boys soccer games Tuesday featured Bayside South schools competing for the chance to bring home a regional title across classes 1A, 2A and 3A. But only one team was able to grab the regional title, and that school was Crisfield.

Crisfield made the short trip to Pocomoke to face the Warriors on the road Tuesday, and left with a 2-1 win and a spot in the state quarterfinals. Both goals for the Crabbers were scored by Conner Hainey, with AJ Swift also assisting on both. Now, the Class 1A East Regional Champions will make their way to the Class 1A State Quarterfinals.

The Bayside Conference Champion James M. Bennett boys soccer team saw their undefeated season come to an end at home on Tuesday, as they lost 3-0 to South River in the Class 3A Regional Championship game. And the Parkside Rams lost to Queen Anne's 3-2 in their Class 2A Regional Title matchup, with Queen Anne's scoring a goal in double overtime to defeated Parkside.
