BASEBALL: Verdigris sweeps Oologah in district play

Apr. 11—Verdigris baseball made a statement this week as it swept Oologah in District 4A-7 action, solidifying its position at the top of the standings.

With a commanding record of 17-7 overall and a mark of 10-2 in district play as of Thursday night, the Cardinals have taken sole ownership of the top spot. The Mustangs, currently in second place, hold a respectable record of 13-9 overall and 9-3 in district play.

VERDIGRIS 3, OOLOGAH 0

Verdigris took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to the efforts of Landon Wine, who drew a walk and scored one run, and Ethan Hushbeck, who hit a single and brought in two runs.

Luke Patterson played a pivotal role in securing the win for the Cardinals, pitching a stellar game.

Patterson, a right-hander, displayed skill and composure on the mound, surrendering only five hits and no runs over seven innings. He struck out three batters and walked just one, showcasing his dominance and control.

On the opposing side, Asher Streater started the game as the pitcher for Oologah.

Streater, also a right-handed pitcher, gave it his all but ultimately faced a tough Cardinals lineup. He allowed four hits and three runs over six innings, striking out eight batters and walking three.

Hushbeck was the standout performer for Verdigris, making a significant impact both on the mound and with his bat.

Hushbeck contributed two runs batted in during the game, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Kamden Neal, Boston Acosta, Barrett Marlow and Hushbeck each collected one hit for the Cardinals.

Additionally, Verdigris executed three double plays.

Jaxson Burchett and Jett Griswold were the top performers for the Mustangs, each collecting two hits during the game.

VERDIGRIS 7, OOLOGAH 3

The Cardinals wasted no time in taking the lead, scoring early in the top of the first inning.

Acosta kicked off the scoring with a double, bringing in one run and setting the tone for the game.

Verdigris continued to build on its lead in the top of the third inning when Mac West and Patterson both singled, with West scoring a run after tagging up. Each hit resulted in another run, extending the Cardinals' advantage.

Coming in as a relief pitcher, Neal pitched four and one-third innings, allowing only one hit and one run while striking out 11 batters and walking just two. Acosta started the game as the pitcher for Verdigris, allowing one hit and two runs over two and two-thirds innings.

On the opposing side, Landon Roach took the mound first for Oologah.

Roach faced a tough Cardinals lineup, giving up seven hits and seven runs over five and one-third innings while striking out five batters and walking three.

West led Verdigris with two runs batted in, and Wes McClanahan went 3-for-3 at the plate, contributing significantly to the Verdigris offensive success.

Acosta also collected two hits for the Cardinals in four at-bats.

Kaden Fisher led the Mustangs with one run batted in.

Despite the loss, the Mustangs displayed patience at the plate, accumulating six walks throughout the game. Fisher and Burchett led the team with two bases on balls each.
